Shadow Ruins Can't get to Wind Jumping Area

After completing the Rune Jumping exercse and reaching the southernmost ledge, the east shadow gate does not take me to the Wind Jump area as the walkthrough indicates. It takes me to small narrow space with shadow gates on the east and west ends and solid walls on the north and south. If I continue to go east I am "zoned" back into the same small room. The western shadow gate puts me back in the Rune Jumping puzzle area.
Anyone have any suggestions?

After reaching the ledge and facing the east gate, enter it and notice direction pointed to by knights sword. Go through gates the sword points to. When you arrive on the shadow island, go W, S, N, S, then E to the wind jump puzzle.
