Most effective solo classes...

Post by Disco Stew »

What, in your opinion are the most effective solo classes. I'm thinking of taking up the solo challenge myself, but I don't know if I should focus on sheer power(paladin or something), verstility(fighter/mage/thief etc.), or something in between.

I'm thinking dual class combos like kensai/mage and kensai/theif woould be best, but I'm unsure.

Any help would be much appreciated.

For me:
(in order of preference)
1)F/M/T
2)Bard
3)Multi/dual class with mage

Note:
The F/M/T will never get the mage high level abilities. He also cast spells with lower power than a bard. But I like it anyway.

I've just started BG1 with a theif/mage multiclass ( to get all the tomes ), the plan is to solo him as soon as he gets to BG2 possibly ToSC if I feel I can do it. I think either a multiclass mage fighter/theif mabye cleric for the awesomw spell trigger and bolt of glory combo. Or start out as a theif and dual him later to whatever u like playing as. I honestly don't know much about the new classes in BG2 as I always start from BG1 so there might be a more powerful solo there?

just realised that doesn't read too well. I meant a multiclassed mage with either a fighter or a theif or a cleric. ok k

My Kensai-Mage is a reeealy killing machine. Now i'm in UnderDark and he has 9-16 lev. allready. But without a thief near,is hard and frustrating.I can't steal,I can't disarm etc.SO.....I don't know.My fovorite class is Monk.I have one at 19 lev. and is almost perfect and i liked so much because is exotic too.Everybody play with F/M/T or F/M/C.I'm sick of this!

Grrrrr. I hate how many traps/locks there are in chapter 2! I think I'm gonna go for a fighter/mage dual or multi, not sure. At least there isn't very much theiving needed once you get to chapter 3.

I don't like the idea of 3 classes-- you can do everything, but you're not good at it...

It is relative.

Imagine:
Group Alpha: a F/M/T
Group Beta: a Fighter, a Mage, a Thief and a Cleric.

Imagine this two groups are in the Chapter 3. Of all characters(including both groups) who is the best fighter? the F/M/T. Who is best Mage? the F/M/T. And who is the best Thief? the F/M/T.
The multi/class character are made to eat space on the group in ways to economize XP. See, in the example I show above, the level in fighter of the multiclass is higher than the singleclass(and he can also backstab :D ). It is relative.

Berserker/Mage is really easy if you don't mind resting often.

No Kensai/Mage. Berserk is great. Immunity to lots of effects that will end the game for you if solo, such as Confusion and Stun. Can use bracers, helmets and bows (which matter before you reach level 5 Mage).

No Swashbuckler/Mage. Knock opens anything that could possibly be picked. Traps are avoided by having Spell Deflection/Turning/Trap up at all times (or the Minor versions and Berserk (for Maze)). Picking pockets might be fun, but Fighter abilities give much more of an edge in combat than anything you could steal. Stealing from shops is totally unnecessary; before Chapter 2 is over, you won't know what to spend your cash on anyway.

I imagine Stalker/Cleric and Pries of Helm/Mage to be pretty cool as well (and will definitely try them out next). The Priest/Mage has troubles in Chapter 1 and start of 2, though.

Berzerker/cleric i think, look at xyx note why berzerkers rule, then add that clerics dont have to rest a lot, just use the lowlevel spell draw upon holy might andyou will be ok. And many good spells for the tougher battles. And summon spells are very helpful solo, Clerics got the best of those

I soloed a monk through bg2 and after chapter 1 & 2 i found it very easy. The real hard part for a monk doesnt start till ToB.

I go for the F/M/T. Since you are doing solo, all the xp's are yours for the taking. Therefore, you'd get the same level (if not faster) had you played your pc with, let's say, a party of 4.

I've got a F/M/T, and I tell you, this guy ROCKS!

Since this is an SoA Forum, all I can say is you aint seen nothing what this guy can do if you use him solo when you play ToB. The special spells there will give you a clue.

Imagine this - while invisible, time stop, backstab, then hack the enemy away with your multi-attacks - and that my friend, is just the tip of the iceberg of tremendous possibilities  !

Of course you get to get rid of those pesky traps. Some of these traps are really a pain in one's gluteus maximus if you are not aware of them and you set them off.

When I hide in shadows and get to scout the opposition, I step back just enough for them not to see me (no red circles around), then immediately hide in shadows right after I cast one of my nasty area-offensive spells. The opposition is practically your proverbial sitting duck as they have no idea what hit them.

You can also set traps around you as a defense of sorts just in case there are still some of them left and are in your direction. ;)

Well, Nuff said... for now...

I'm personaly soloing an archer right now, my next probably will be an assassin or an f/m/t

all i can say is archers are very effective at soloing, but its hard in chapter 1-2 untill u get the boot of speed, and it become fairly easey untill you run into lots of critter in limited space. and that leather only armor restriction sucks because i have yet to get my grubby paws on the black dragon armor, when i do it'll be so much easer.

Wondering if any one ever use the cloak of the sewers all the time? i personaly think the troll form + holly might from the speical ability rocks when i have to enter melee like mosters i can't damage with arrows i then try to use that troll form and its regeneration rocks, but it can get overwhelmed its not a super fighter, but its little better than meleeing with a archer. and second use i have for it is when i'm low on health and in safe area and want to save health potation then i transform and regenerate like 10 hp like every second or close or something
bah bah, sig? Me? naaa.

Whoa, no Time Stop for a triple classer, I'm afraid. Unless you knock off the XP cap. You need 9 mil XP to reach level 18 Mage and get your first level 9 spell... :(

Of course, that also means no level 10 spells... You pretty much miss out on all high level Mage abilities except for the bonus level 7 and 8 spell.

Soloing is quite easy with almost any class, so I would choose the one you think you'll have the most fun with. For me it is a generalist mage.

I am soloing through for my fist time at the moment. At first I wasn't quite sure what to expect orther than to get my backside handed to me on a plate. But it's been incredibly easy with my F/M/T. The only problems I had was at the start when I had no healing spells and only healed 1hp/8hrs, but as soon as I got outside of the first dungeon I went and stole the ring of regen from the adventurer's mart and just put it on every time I went to sleep. I've been breezing through the whole game, I would really suggest to those who haven't tried to solo because they thought it would be too hard to go and have a try. It's much easier that you think. :)

I'm soloing a mage but I really want to find a time stop scroll before I go to the underdark. Unfortunately I got fed up and already went to Brynnlaw. Out of curiosity, can I pick one up before I hit the underdark? I doubt it but can't hurt to ask :)
