Computer controlled casters with hardcore rules?

Is it just me or does the computer controlled casters not have to follow the hardcore rules that aoe spells should damage partymembers?
First of all I think im proud or something over playing by hardcore rules (like it proves anything...) instead of normal. But seeing as how I have a wizard as my main character it is quite frustrating, damaging ure whole team with fireballs or just completely messing things up with a misplaced confusionspell. But I suppose I could live with that.
But then when I tried controlling khelgar instead of my main wizard, my wizard turns out to be much better at aiming all kinds of spells!(making me feel like a noob) Or perhaps its just that the computercontrolled character does not have to adhere to the same rules as the player?
This all leads me to think that I should either: a) Start a new character who is a fighter. b) Keep playing khelgar as my wizard dishes out dmg. c) Set difficulty to normal and nuke away.
But I dislike all these options
