Holiday shopping links (no spam)
For the last few years we've had sticky shopping link threads around the time of what's hilariouisly referred to as the holidays. This is--wait for it!--one of 'em. It's simply for places you've personally tried that have classy and unusual gifts, the kinds of things most people wouldn't find on their own.
And please remember, if you use this thread to advertise your business or anything that gives you a break, your Isle of Langerhans will be forcibly separated from the rest of your body. With a spoon. Thanks.

for people with teenagers that are into punk stuff, it has clothing, cds, accessories, its worth a look if you know someone who's punk, and they sell emo stuff as well, like spiked wristbands, wristbands, bandanas, popular punk/emo/hardcore/ska clothes and cd's
Interpunk.com - The Ultimate Punk Music Store

No, Sean, it doesn't have to be a holiday site. It only has to be a site where you can buy holiday gifts that are classy and unusual. So your post certainly fits the thread.

Well, someone showed me this last night when I couldn't sleep. Classy enough for you folks? I recommend this Vanishing Civil Liberties Mug (Heat Activated), $10.95.
Mug features the complete text of the Bill of Rights, but pour in a hot beverage and see what remains thanks to the Patriot Act!

Unfortunately, temporarily out of stock, vanished just like Civil Liberties...

I've found Novica useful in the past for buying standard gifts with an international folk touch. Reason I prefer them to quite a few similar sites is that no religious group has arranged this for a village, thus extending their influence over its people (purely by chance, of course, *cough*), and no factories are involved in churning out lookalike stuff. Individual craftspeople are listed for each item, usually with a bit about their specific backgrounds.

This may be obvious to many of us hardcore nerds.. But I quite like ThinkGeek :: Stuff for Smart Masses because they have tons of stuff that I like, and they have good deals and gift packs this time of year.

Here's another place to shop for the holidays: Treehugger
I'm certainly not into that kind of thing, but I heard about it on NPR and I thought that others here might like it.

Custom Knives is a good roundup site for handcrafted knives, both the utilitarian and fancy kinds.

For the Mason in your life, or for you if you're one of my Brothers:
Hiramhunter Masonic Supply -- Thank You For Traveling To Our Site.
I've used that site for years, with good luck. He started on ebay, I think.
Most people would never think of a Masonic gift, but if you have a Mason in your life, it's a good idea.

I can't either. While I'm posting this, I might as well post my responses to some of them:
@ Fable, I hate you. I want some of those knives but can't afford them. Some of them are gorgeous work though.
@ Jopp, You should try some of the Bawls stuff they sell at ThinkGeek :: Stuff for Smart Masses. High caffiene fruit drink, goes great with JD or vodka.
Probably nothing surprising for folks, but just the same, I figured I'd post this. I like supporting random artists and whenever I end up with a little extra money, I tend to browse through deviantART: where ART meets application! to see if anything there catches my fancy. Photos, paintings, graphic art, whatever. You can get prints, and sometimes an original canvas, mug or mousepad with the art you like there. I've done business with them before and haven't been dissapointed yet.

Sorry, I just fixed Hiramhunter. There was a typo in the URL.
I've had Bawls. Hy-Vee, a grocery store in Iowa, carried it when I was in high school.. I can tell you, I've consumed a lot of Bawls in my day.

I've found that Criterion has the most reliable rereleases of older films (older meaning anything from the 1920s through to the 1980s) on their website. Excellent prints, all cleaned up (sometimes startlingly so), frequently with a lot of useful extra features.

Just a general remember to keep this limited to "classy and unusual gifts," per the opening thread comment, above. If you can find whatever a site offers at a good number of other sites, it really doesn't go, here.
On other matters: Jop, I know Criterion has a Malle triple bill on DVD.
I'd also recommend AbeBooks for rare and used book needs. As always, remain cautious when dealing with third party buyers and sellers, but this marketplace site deservedly has a good rep, in my opinion.

I've had a couple of PM'd requests to re-sticky this old thing, again--so here it is.
Remember, it's only for posting sites "you've personally tried that have classy and unusual gifts, the kinds of things most people wouldn't find on their own."

Thanks for the link fable. It will come in handy once I'm finished with all the holiday season games.fable wrote:I'd also recommend AbeBooks for rare and used book needs. You also said it has a good rep. Have you tried it personally?

AbeBooks, you mean? Well, I've used them successfully a couple of times. They sent out my purchases very quickly, and in secure conditions that prevented any mauling along the way. I can't speak for anybody else's experience, but mine were uniformly good.
Again, let's please stick to reccomendation posts in this thread, based on unusual giftsites. Thanksk.
