I am sure there are lots of different classes that different people will think are lousy, it is a subjective opinion. Do I think that shugenja "sucks"? Nope, they get some good learning bonuses for arcane and nether magic and can use ninjutsu.

Maybe you could ask your friend to clarify why he or she thinks the class is bad...saying something sucks and leaving it at that is a little too vague. Better yet, start a mage character and try the class out for yourself. Then you can decide from a firsthand perspective. :)

Forgetfull

I'm the friend that thinks they "sucks", I just think for a mage they don't seem to get the learning bounuses that an all-out assault mentalcase needs. He forgot to mention that I said for his fighter-mage it would be good (sigh)

A Battlemage is the class that would really be better with fighter, not Shugenja. Well, that is to say it requires more for weapons and armor skills then a shugenja does.

Just as a comparision between all three of the variations, (the two second and third tier classes offered by the Guild of Mages--and the mage path that is offered from the Eastern House guild) and here are the learning bonuses that each receives.

Again, I think it comes down to what sort of thing interests a person and what path they want to go down for their character. :)

mage/ sorcerer/ wizard
mage/ battlemage/warlock
mage/ shujenga/kenjassi

If you look at the third tier classes diabolic skill, then "Spellfire" (from wizard) is in my opinion FAR superior to either Ironwill or Drainlife, but again, it really depends on the person playing the game, what skills they are interested in ect... Personal preference.
