I recently got ahold of a copy of the original Gothic. Problem is I can't figure out how to equip a weapon. I picked up the pick axe but have tried every damn key on my keyboard and he won't equip it. Know why/how? :]
If I remember well, you have to open your inventory and click on the weapon you want.

In addition, once you have chosen the weapon that you want to select, hold the 'Ctrl' key and the 'up' key to equip it. Sounds pretty cumbersome but that's how it works.

Open the inventory, click on it and it will put a number next to it - a 1 for a melee weapon and a 2 for a bow, then 4-9 for scrolls. To equip just press that number on your keyboard once you have exited your inventory. To equip the last used weapon, press space.
