Does the Holy Avenger cut through Stoneskins?

Post by spork »

It seems that whenever I'm whacking a monster with stoneskins, I get through much quicker when using Carsomyr than with some other weapon. I know it dispells magic with every hit, but does Dispell Magic remove a Stoneskin? I thought not. I even had my mage volunteer for stoneskin testing. It took 9 whacks with Carsomyr to get through--which is how I thought it should be.

Anyway, it's possible I'm just imagining this effect of enemy stoneskins being disspelled by the Holy Avenger. If someone else noticed it too I'd feel less crazy.

Also, just what does "dispel magic" remove, exactly? Does it get any spell protections? Or is it only stuff like Haste and Fire Shield Red and potion effects?

I'm not sur, but it seems the Holy Avenger dispels only when it deals damage... I might be wrong, though. Feel fre to correct me :D

Okay Silverfist, I will :D

Dispel Magic occurs on every hit, whether it does any damage or not. The chances of Dispel dispelling a stoneskin is dependent on the level of the caster of the stoneskin and the level of the paladin. Since most mages you meet will be a lower level than you, you have a better chance of dispelling their skins(and they will throw up less). But your own mage will be of a higher level and will not be dispelled so easily.

As to the "what does Dispel dispel" question, it is a good one. I don't actually know, and it doesn't state it in the manual, but I expect it is limited to 5th level and lower or something.

OK, so maybe I'm not imagining the dispelling effect. That's great! It didn't occur to me that this might be about relative levels. I'll try to find a way to test this.

Thank you,

Dispel magic con counter most any continuous magic effect unless specifically stated it can't work.

I think that Carsomyr's dispel effect works at a certain "caster level" - I heard it worked like a dispel cast by a 15th level mage once. So it's not based on the level of the user. This is why Carsomyr works so great against lower level mages (say 17th level and lower) it's dispelling their protections a lot of the time. It doesn't work so well against higher level mages like Lichs or Irenicus, though, because their stoneskins are cast at a much higher level.

Against them if you really want to dispel, you have to use Keldorn's Inquisitor Dispel Magic ability, which casts at double his level (and fast, too :D )
