How do you activiate the interdimensional sphere. Nothing seems to work. Is it a tele transport device? Thanks

In The Githyanki Base In Act I, when you get it from Mephasm, you can use it on the "portals" surrounding Zeeaire, or (as I did), you can just break them :) I'm not familiar with any other use of the sphere.
