ive killed the vampire in the asylum but i have no stakes to kill him to get the hand im stuck!!! any suggestions

Yup. Go to the east portion of that same level and complete that area for the time being. I can't remember where exactly, but there's a couple of stakes to be had in either a container or from a dead foe.
Good luck, and remember...when I say "east", don't forget the maps in BG2 are presented on an 20-30 degree, counter-clockwise angle so east is really pointing to approx. 2 o'clock on your screen.
