Pokielin - end of game

Post by magpie150 »

I managed to reach "almost dead" but can't finish him off

I then upgraded to Heart of Winter as I read that it had patches to overcome a bug at the end of the game, but its harder than ever now.

HoW changes the AI so it is harder. You haven't put Heart of Fury mode on though have you? That is really hard and is basically the insane difficulty level.

If you are having trouble with the AI now because of HoW, try using summons or area effect spells such as web and grease to slow down their advancement and then pick a few off with ranged weapons.

It is in the configuration settings, but I've just realised it won't be switched on because you have to start a new game to switch to HoF mode. In what way has the final battle become harder as a result of HoW? All HoW does is change the AI so you can no longer use the black fog in areas to stop enemies from all attacking at once and possibly makes them use spells more appropriately (but I'm not sure about that). The method you used to get him to almost dead should still be the same.

Just out of interest, do you mean the battle with him in the Underdark? If so then it should trigger dialogue etc. when he gets to almost dead. You may have to go back to a save before entering that area and redo that area.

it is the final ending, where the iron golems try to follow the mage. I have uninstalled HOW and am back to where I was. I've been trying to do this for about a month

Do you need tactical advice since he's too powerful or are you experiencing the bug where he just won't die, even if you do serious damage after the display showed "almost dead" ?

If it's a bug just retry, maybe you've done too much damage too fast and are luckier the next time. The second or the third attempt always worked for me until I installed Auril's Bane.
If the battle's too hard you can search the forums or post your party for specific advice.

Auril's Bane is a mod. You do not need it to take care of the Belhifet bug. A patch should suffice.

One thing that's always helped me with this battle is to summon some tough, fire-resistant creatures (fire elementals, or stalkers if I have a druid) and get them to attack Belhifet. Even if he's attacking one of your guys, just run his target around until he switches his attack to your summons. That gives you some time to take out the iron golems and/or cornugons. After that, you need fire protection and brute melee force (the only missiles that work are Arrows of Piercing). Try not to move around too much because of the Dispel Magic traps. Potions of giant strength are good, as is the spell Draw Upon Holy Might for your paladin and cleric. If something gets really hurt, pull it out of the fight and Heal it or use Otiluke's Resilient Sphere to make it impervious to further attacks.

It's a nasty fight, because you can't pre-buff your party, there are several tough enemies (HoW adds more demons), and it's impossible to disarm the dispel traps.
When your back is against the wall... the other guy is in a whole lotta trouble.

Auril's Bane is a mod which adds overpowered equipment and prevented me from finishing the game correctly and seeing the end sequence. Not exactly what you need now.

If you delivered the broken sword in the prologue you should go out first and talk to the guy in the southwest, he'll give you a very good 2-handed sword.
You probably have talked with the proisoners you freed and gotten the potions already.

With HoW this battle is easier since you can collect a lot of XP and better equipment in the HoW areas if you enter them before the final fight.
But it should be doable without.
Since your party level is low I assume that you played at "easy" difficulty and got less XP than normal (With HoW you would have gotten more than normal), which makes this battle even harder.

First thing I'd do before the fight is setting the difficulty to very easy.
Learn where the traps are, you'll have to avoid them. A lot of pausing and micromanaging is essential.

It's important to kill the enemies before they kill you, try to buff up your party as fast and as good as possible. Pause the game as soon as possible and give casting commands, don't waste precious seconds.
Have the mage cast haste, the cleric recitation, have the others gulp down potions like the potion of storm giant strength.

After the first round the cleric should keep on buffing with spells like protection from evil 10' or prayer while the warriors charge all at the same victim.
Have your mage run away from the golems and when he's got enough distance cast stoneskin and later magic missiles at Behilfet. You can also cast chromatic orb at Behilfet, he'll probably save but there's a chance that he fails his save and then you can easily finish him off ending the battle.
