Entering Baldur's Gate before chapter 5?

I vaguely recall that there was a glitch which allowed you to do so. Is it possible? If yes, then does my game get corrupted for doing so (like by triggering certain events in beforehand)? I only considered doing so for recruiting some NPCs earlier.

You cannot enter Baldurs gate before chapter 5 the legal way. I'm not sure if it would corrupt your game if you would try it through cheats, but I assume it is possible that way.

Once and only once when coming back from the zombie infested farm to the map with BG bridge on, the game set me at the far end on the bridge thus allowing me access into BG city. I've tried it many times since and always ended up at the "correct" end of the bridge.

From what I remember I promptly went off and did all the maps after topping up all the goodies I decided I'd get from the city. It made the rest of the quests an awful lot easier, which some of us may like but did make the game bit too easy at times.
