I've been running with a Mark 2 Desert Eagle, .44 Mag, Neostead, and CAWS for my close range guns. Are there anything better than them for close range guns? I've tried using SMGs on burst for close range but since I don't have the Pancor Jackhammer right now I'm a little short at what to search for in the game.
Also, I've been trying to find good uses for grenades, mines, and explosive weapons that I have so far. I've just recently finished Macomb, Quincy, and Preoria at Bunker Beta and I think I start fighting Super Mutants next. I'm wondering if explosive weapons from this point on are at all useful.
FOT: Close range guns and explosives..
Yeah I'm in the middle of the St. Louis mission; which is the first mission fighting mutants. I decided to get my gun expert a shot at using Rockets and he pretty much owned the crap out of a mutant with the Rocket Launcher. Grenades are pointless against mutants. Yeah, they hurt them, but they only slow them down from their quick counter attack with their Browning or SAW.
I've also noticed that having close range guns like a Neostead or CAWS on a couple of my guys really does make a difference when the mutants run out of ammo and charge straight at me. I've gotten pretty close to where I originally was at when I quit playing the game and that was the mission where you have to protect the Bishop and kill all the mutants.
Anyone else have info. to share?

Especailly certain grenades are very usefull against mutants. I think Frag grenades were such. The good thing in FOT is that you don't have to see the enemy (IE. if they are lying behind obstacle), you can just throw the grenade near them, and the explosion makes the damage.
Also, the good point in this is that you initate the combat, so you can usually throw 2-3 grenades during one turn, which usually kills any mutant. You can use this trick to kill mutants while they can't see you and thus can't shoot at you.

Who said I use Turn-Based Combat?
Anyway, I recruited a Gun/Throwing specialist that can hose enemies with a M2 and flush guys out with grenades. I didn't realise Frag. Grenades do like 30-55 damage a toss. That's acceptable damage. I originally thought they did like half that; which is why I never used them until Jefferson mission. I've also had that Gun/Thrower specialist use the Rocket Launcher as well. Sniping enemies from 40 point distance with a rocket launcher is very fun.
