For sure, I'd say play BG1 first. For many, many reasons.
During the Prologue, spend alot of time talking to the green-robed monks throughout the grounds of Candlekeep. They offer good tidbits of advice. Other non-monk characters offer tutorials for combat, group combat, etc. Do all this before talking to Gorion and initiating Chapter 1.
The tutorial for BG2 ain't bad, either.

Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...
