Yep, that's what I've been wondering. Are proficiencies active while you're shapechanged into a weapon using form and do those forms actually use weapons. I mean would five points in spears help while in a salamander form or would a Monk's unarmed skill help while in an Iron Golem form?
Thanks in advance for answering.

Are proficiencies active while shapechanged?
“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.”
I read somewhere here on the forums that Cernd's attacks proc the knockback effect of the Staff of the Ram while shapechanged in a wolfwere, so i assume the game uses your equipped weapon somewhere in the equations. (special effects and range perhaps?)
Although i think the game just lets you wield your temporary weapon (be it halberd, fists or jelly splashes) without bonuses/penalties from proficiencies. Only str, enchantment and similar outside factors affect your cth. I might be wrong though, i've alway taken this for granted and thus never actually checked it.

Not sure about spell shape changes but for the shapeshifter the weapon effects and damage seem to stack with the werewolf claws, but not the +enchantment on them. So if you have a +5 scimitar then change into a greater werewolf, the claws will still only count as +4. Also interesting is that if you complete the druid stronghold and take your first level as great druid, you can wear armor, which is great because it stacks with the werewolfs armor bonus.
Most of the mods allow one other thing - dispellation effect on your "paws" when shapeshifted. Then, the original weapon reveals, with it all of your proficiencies and bonuses, yet you still keep the number of attacks of your present form. This greatly helps with a Mindflayer form since these guys have a normal 4 attacks. With improved haste 8. And this whole thing can be used by a Sorcerer with the Staff of the Ram...
