That game is driving me nuts! (official patch v1.2 and latest "true" patch installed)
a) It is dead slow. Always was, but lately it is lagging like mad. I can't even walk along the street or something. My PC actually meets the system requirements, I only have essential background applications running and all visual effects are turned off / set to high performance instead of high quality. I don't get it. I've never had problems like that with other (more demanding) games. Maybe you know some tricks...
b) Downtown. When I started off there I first wanted to complete the quests that were still left from Santa Monica (meeting those guys in the apartments and in that tower, like, the first two buildings you come across), but everytime I tried to enter one of those buildings the game crashed to desktop. Tried it several times, in vain.
So I came on here and read that someone once had a similar problem and was advised to stroll around a bit, talk to people and stuff. I did so, met the regent and went into the hotel, was working fine, but I still can't enter the apartments and the tower. Any ideas how to fix that?
I'm desperate! Would be more than great if you could maybe help me along.
Two problems
So what exactly are your computer specifications, cause even though you might be able to play other games doesn't mean you can play all the games with near identical requirements....Especially since VTM is infamous for it's memory lag. I have 2 Gigabyte RAM and I still get lags sometimes after playing for some hours. Only saving and restarting the game helps.a) It is dead slow. Always was, but lately it is lagging like mad. Recent lagging might have other problems though. A new Anti Virus software maybe ? A Defragmentation of your Harddisc may help to.

When I was first playing, it was a 1.5 GHz 32-bit with 1M memory and a fairly decent graphics card. After I did everything you did, it was playable - but just barely. Thus, I got used to sneaking everywhere - much easier to play that way on a borderline machine.eevaa wrote:That game is driving me nuts! (official patch v1.2 and latest "true" patch installed)

I upgraded a little over a year ago to substantially friskier 1.99 GHz 64 X2 Athlon with 2 Gb of RAM a Radeon X1600 series with .5 Gb of Ram. The first time I played VTMB after buying it, I was over-correcting like crazy.
You have to watch it when they say "minimum system requirements". Technically, XP will run in 512 MB of ram. By the time you open notepad you're in the paging file already, but technically it does run, as does VTMB on your system - just barely.
Usually the best short term fixes are more memory and a better graphics card, if you can't afford to replace the system completely.

My PC is about 4 years old, with 512mb RAM and an Intel Chip, plus a P4 processor. The game runs fine, you just need to reboot every hour or so due to the resource leakage in the game engine. You don't need a really powerful machine to play Bloodlines with very little lag. You just have to bear in mind that if your PC is close to the min specs that you will need to restart the game, and your PC, every so often when you notice the lagging increasing.Jhereg wrote:You have to watch it when they say "minimum system requirements". @eevaa
What applications are you classing as essential? If you have borderline specs or performance issues then it helps a lot if you make sure the PC is disconnected from the internet. Doing this means you can then close your firewall and your virus scan as there is no way for anyone to hack into your pc or for a virus to get on it (unless it is from a floppy disk or a CD, but seeing as you are playing a game there is no reason to use either, except the Bloodlines CD which won't have a virus on it). Also turn off any virus shields. You'll be surprised by how much this can improve performance. I use this trick for both Bloodlines and Morrowind, both of which use quite a lot of resources.
