BG2 and 6800gt agp

Post by greenfirkraag »

Hiya all, i have a 6800gt agp gfx card and for some reason i can't run tob with 3d acceleration enabled. When i run the test or the game itself, the screen turns monochrome and i can only see the top left portion of the image. Without 3d acc turned off, the game runs slow as hell, so HELP! The game is patched to the last version, i have the latest nvidia whql drivers installed, etc etc. Thanks in advance.

Although I have never had this problem as I play the BG games on a PC that is about 4 years old now, I have heard other people comment that sometimes on newer PCs they have to actually roll back the drivers to older versions in order to play older games.

Also, which Operating System are you using, XP or Vista?

Xp, sorry to have failed to mention that.
Ugh, i was hoping i wouldn't have to roll back to older drivers. I don't see why the game runs at a weird resolution and turns monochrome when i turn 3d acc on.

Before trying to roll back drivers, it might be worth trying to alter the compatibility settings:

Right Click on the icon for the game, then click properties, then click the compatibility tab.

Try playing around with various things on there to see if that works.

The compatibility mode screws things up even more, as the game crashes right away. It seems the only choice is to try older drivers. Any ideas which build i should try? =)

Before downgrading drivers, what resolution you use in the game and in windows?

Perhaps trying to change the resolution in the game and/or windows helps?

1024x768 in windows, 800x600 in the game, though neither that nor 1024x768 works.

Have you tried to change your resolution to 800*600 in windows before launching the game?

Hella old, but since it's a VERY relevant topic:

a) turn off 3d acceleration in BGII config
b) temporarily turn off DirectDraw acceleration (use run from startmenu, just type in "dxdiag" minus the quotes and press enter, don't have to look for the executable or anything - DirectDraw acceleration is in the third tab from the left in WinXP)
c) it *will* give you some mouse flicker for some reason, but it'll run better and w/ less glitches
d) remember to turn DD acceleration back on for other uses - it'll bugger up some video players (KM that i know for sure, probably others) and make some games unplayable if you don't!

NOTE: you gotta do A & B, not either-or
