I have BG2 on 3 machines - the oldest one has so many patches and special features etc that it is quite different from the vanilla installation on the laptop and the differently-patched dual-core.
when I get a problem - I copy the saved game using a data key, place a copy in the save-game directory (avoiding the name "autosave" where possible) and play from there past the problem.
I have been playing on my oldest machine and have a problem. I have bought lots of top-notch equipment from the bonus-merchants that do not appear on my other machines. If I transport the save game to a newer (and possibly generally less reliable installation) - will the Robe of Vecna etc disappear? will the game cause fatal errors because scripts may be running that are not applicable?
I went to the forest of tethyr and the other new countryside areas - I have just been ambushed near a graveyards and whipped some high-level bandits - I want to move from that area or sleep to recover exhausted spell-books - yet either sleeping or moving causes a crash - I think some Jon Irenicus cut-scene may want to play or the machine to generate some other encounter.
the previous saved games are probably a few hours worth of play earlier...

I think the game will handle the Robe of Vecna etc. even if you don't have the patches on them.
I further guess that, you can import items from ToB to SoA, and the game will still accept them.
So don't worry about exporting your savegames.
BTW, the bandits you killed, were they "the followers of cyric" band?
Or Drizzt and his gang?
Because you have to encounter them on your first journey to the city after your exit from the underdark.
Though mostly unlikely, that may be the cause of your crash.
Sometimes flythrough video intros made crashes but, I don't remember an intro there.
Try changing performance-video options. Maybe that helps.

The world is composed of lies. The only exception is Death.
Cynics
it was the cynical brigade - I had already recruited Drizzt on exiting underdark and before going back to the city to get cromwell to forge a few items, from whence I had travelled back to the wilds - searching for the scroll of crom Freyrs name, which I have most inexplicably misplaced!
that is bluddy annoying - I don't 'console' but may have to in this case. it would be good if there was a save-game analysis that said where it was.
you might be right about changing the video settings - I can remember that fixing problems before.
