playing BG2 on more than one machine

I have BG2 on 3 machines - the oldest one has so many patches and special features etc that it is quite different from the vanilla installation on the laptop and the differently-patched dual-core.
when I get a problem - I copy the saved game using a data key, place a copy in the save-game directory (avoiding the name "autosave" where possible) and play from there past the problem.
I have been playing on my oldest machine and have a problem. I have bought lots of top-notch equipment from the bonus-merchants that do not appear on my other machines. If I transport the save game to a newer (and possibly generally less reliable installation) - will the Robe of Vecna etc disappear? will the game cause fatal errors because scripts may be running that are not applicable?
I went to the forest of tethyr and the other new countryside areas - I have just been ambushed near a graveyards and whipped some high-level bandits - I want to move from that area or sleep to recover exhausted spell-books - yet either sleeping or moving causes a crash - I think some Jon Irenicus cut-scene may want to play or the machine to generate some other encounter.
the previous saved games are probably a few hours worth of play earlier...
