*sigh* indecision...

Post by Danil »

The worst part about every d&d game for me is character creation. I constantly second guess my decision. The problem is that there are *so* many cool combinations of things to be/do that I want to experience it all.

I managed to school myself through the OC, and SoU.

Now in HoTU and I have been rolling up characters for days. Literally, I will sit down and roll up a character, level him/her up try it out for 45 minutes or so, and then save it, and go roll up another to try out some new combo of classes/skills/feats, repeat ad nauseum.

I try coming up with a character concept that seems cool in my mind, and half the time it gets steamrolled by monsters that are worth 35xp, much less anything real, heh.

Finished the OC with a halfling monk 12/shadowdancer 4, it started out hard, and by the time my monk hit 12 I steamrolled everything in my way.

Finished SoU with a halfling sorcerer7/rdd8. Was tough all through, but fun.

And now.. now I am stumped. I thought about a halfling rogue5/assassin5/blackguard5 to start out, using longswords 2 handed... then I second guess and switch to dual wield, then I abandon the whole concept because I hate evil characters, heh.

Likewise went the halfling rogue/blackguard/weaponmaster concept, the halfling sorc/rdd/blackguard concept.

*head explodes*

I've just created a new character myself for Neverwinter Nights, and I've just finished the Prelude, so at the moment she is level three. In terms of power playing she would definetely not be the most powerful character by any means, but regardless she'll most certainly be good enough to breeze through the game, judging from previous play throughs. I'm playing a Neutral Evil female gnome, who is a Mage/Cleric.

I understand that character creation for HoTU is much more important and difficult, but still my humble advice is to choose somthing that is cool and you like (I think the rogue5/assassin5/blackguard5 sounds so interesting, maybe I'll try it out sometime), and then stick to it. Afterall, with my charcter, I find the funnest part of the game is negotiating through the areas of the game where her obvious weaknesses make it difficult, it's so much more rewarding. Although blasting and slashing everything to charcoal/shreds with a sorceror/paladin is equally satisfying :p .

And also, after playing so many good charcters, being evil is just SO FUN! :)

Ok, I think I finally settled on a fun character concept...

Evil halfling sorcerer/rogue/blackguard, the idea being that his 2 melee classes put together level wise will equal his sorcerer level.. so he is at the start of HoTU, sorc8/rogue3/blackguard4.

Why this combo? Definitely not powergaming behind it, I kind of thought a whip wielding evil sorcerer sounded fun. He is a rogue for personality, not breaking traps and chests, so all of his skills are in persuade/intimidate/bluff/tumble and use magic devices rogue wise. Unlike most spellsword type powergaming builds, his spells are mostly offensive fire and lightning spells(he is impatient and brutal).

Why halfling? I just like small sized characters, and I love the hooded halfling head, heh. Sure I get screwed on weapons and dual wielding, but he is like a tiny concentrated ball of seething rage, just waiting for something to set him off. He has a soft spot only for Deekin and his other companions.

For me, the only ones are dual wielders with some fist skills to show off(i can beat valasharess with one blow with my fists or things like that(i have never tried that))

If you want a good char, then sit down and THINK!!!!! Thats sometimes quite hard, but its so rewarding to see your char especially if it has your name to beat all kinds of ugly creatures.... it always makes me feel good about myself. ;)

But seriosly, choose a type of char you want to be, then plan it and test it!!!!! the single player is so easy that nearly anybody can beat the crap out of it.

Have you tested multiplayer? its even more fun. I love beating a friend of mine who thinks that all 2 weapon builds suck :D :D :D :D :D

Danil, I feel your pain. I wish I had a dollar for every character I've created to start HotU that never made it outside Durnan's Inn. Do you know about the bioware Epic Characters Guild and the associated Build Search Engine? Check them both out, especially the search engine. If you think about a combination of classes you can search and then see what other people have done. It is really pretty helpful- I've avoided a lot of mistakes that way.

Well, its not so hard to make a good offensive spellsword.... its all about knowing what to do........
