Simple fighter/thief question
Simple fighter/thief question
Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I couldn't find anything on the forum other than just more advanced things about the issue.
I dual classed to thief when my fighter was 9, don't know if that was too smart but I can't be arsed to perfect the char.
But yeah, the question p): I get back the dual wielding and weapon skills once I pass level 9 on my thief right? Cause I'd like a dual wielder with thief skills to get me by the annoying traps and all of that.

Yes, you will. In fact, if you put a * in Dual-Wielding while a thief, then at the time you regain your fighter levels it will be lost. So put proficiency points in other weapons, not those you already picked with your fighter.
You can always play a Swashbuckler, it is the warrior type of thief and IMO it is best if used only for traps and such. He can also get ** where the usual thief gets only * and receives additional fighting bonuses every five levels. In addition, he can be master in dual-wielding. And at lvl 11 you can dual your Swashbuckler to anything you like - cleric, mage, warrior.
Uh, do you mean that it screws up the proficiencies that the warrior picked if you take the same proficiencies with the thief or just that the extra points you put in proficiencies as a thief will be lost?Yes, you will. Oh, and by the way, if I dual a swashy at 11, must I stick to the swashy weapon skills as well when the warrior surpasses 11? I mean, am I stuck with 2 in dual wielding and little weapon skills once I surpass 11?
I see I haven't made myself clear. I will explain with examples:
1st example: I am a Swashbuckler lvl 11 with *** in Dual-Wielding and ** in Short swords. I dual to a fighter and give him ** in Dual-Wielding and * in Short swords. After reaching fighter lvl 12, and regaining the inactive class proficiencies, my abilities will be *** in dual-wielding and ** in short swords, i.e. the fighter abilities will not replace the swashbuckler's. In fact, the highest possible opportunity will be taken into consideration. So, if you had, * in dual-wielding with your Swashbuckler and then you give you warrior ** in dual-w, then you will have ** when you regain your inactive class. Note the fact that the stars will not cumulate. Each skill simply will take the higher value. So don't put proficiencies in one and the same weapon style with both of your classes, because you'll waste proficiency points.
2nd example: I am a Swashbuckler and I have ** in Dual-Wielding and * in Short Swords. I dual to a mage at lvl 11. I get 1 proficiency point right after dualling and I place it on Daggers. I don't press the level-up button until I have enough xp for lvl 12 mage(straight from lvl 1 to lvl 12, the xp needed is 750 000). Then I press lvl-up, and I have 2 more proficiencies which NOW I can distribute however I want with my inactive class activated. I.e. I can put a third star in dual-wielding and a second in Short Swords.

If you're dual classing to Mage or Fighter, any weapon will do. If you want to dual class to Cleric (the most interesting option, IMO), I think that Quarterstaves are the only viable option.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Quarterstaves are the only viable option", do you mean that's the only weapon they can use, or that that's the best weapon they can use?Berethor wrote:If you're dual classing to Mage or Fighter, any weapon will do. I'm very new to the game myself, but I recently rolled a dualclassed ranger/cleric on the advise of the very helpful people here, and she can wield all blunt weapons. That includes maces, flails, hammers and slings as well, besides the quarterstaff. I'm happily dualwielding a mace and a flail at the moment, and that works great.
Are we talking about a thief dualed to cleric here, or fighter? For a thief then staff is the best option, but for fighter surely it has to be flail for Flail of Ages and Defender of Easthaven?Craig wrote:Viable as in best route.
