Playing through for a second time. The walkthrough here has been invaluable. I never would have made it across the sewer bridge without it (I might have eventually, but that troll would have killed me every time, or I'd be lost in Fargrove somewhere).
First time through was female elf fighter/adept/valkyrie/monk/warwitch. Lots of fun with that with many options to choose from to kill the bad guys.
This time I decided to try out rangerlord with shugenja as the other second tier. Not much good has been said about rangerlord in the forums, I wanted to try anyway (stubborn me I also tried out urgoth as well). As a note the boss for Rangerlord drops the bow of vines. Not exactly the bow of the avenger, but the vines help out a bit slowing down mobs before they get to you. The Hawkeye is OK. Critical strikes are usually against weak opponents or when health is less then half remaining. With the bow of vines and the hawkeye skill I can usually keep mobs out of my face. Every so often I need to let go of the bow and kick some heads in. Ninjitsu is a nice back up as it seems to be faster attacks then with weapons. I have a nether impaler and other decent medium weapons, but I find hand to hand doing good damage more consistently. I think a duel wield second tier such as samurai would work well also. I also sometimes use the hand to hand to try and pry things loose with the steal (not so much any more). That is for the majority of the game, walking from place to place and through the halls of dungeons ect. When it comes time for a real fight the artillery comes out to play (blast nova, flamethrower, ice shards, ect). Something that I haven't seen mentioned in the forum or the walkthrough is that hawkeye works for thrown weapons as well as bows. I have the shuriken of night that makes a nice weapon for those bad guys that need a little more oomph to take down or are immune to vines (chunnelers in partuclar I have noticed).
One thing inaccurate in the walkthrough is that for the rangerlord boss "Javetta the Slayer", it mentions that "we didn't see any evidence of her men". I had to fight through about a half dozen each of Fathien Elite and Drey Mercenaries. Since I have only seen these guys in Ulm before or since I can only guess that this is her crew.
I don't get the heavy armor or weapons (though selling them adds to the wallet). I have settled on the imperial armor set for the most part, though I added the mythnir items I find. I also reloaded the chest up near the guardians of the forest until i got the bladewitch promagic. it looks good, but I am not sure I would have been better off keeping the assassin garb that came out first. The walkthrough doesn't mention it, but you get a +10 parry. I almost got it confused with the bladewitch as it just had straps for the female character, so it still looks good. The Demonplate was in there along with some other useful medium armor (nether shoulders and diamyo's kabuto are two other items I almost settled for). Some good heavy armor pieces came from there as well; dragon helm and shoulders, shield of evil, shield of demons. every now and then a shield and an armor piece would pop out. I'd probably head out there earlier the next time through as it gives out useful items relatively early (if you want to fight through the trees you can open it as soon as you can leave fargrove).
I haven't given duelwielding a good run through (my urgoth test had it but I gave that character up when I realized that even completing the trial of the elders and returning the argalia wasn't enough to get me through the gates of the elven fortress). I guess that will be next, and I want to give shadowlord a try as well. Maybe wizard at some point.
Some things I have noticed
First off, great post
Recently I finished a game with the Rangerlord class but as I had the Battlemage class I could wear heavy armour. I didn't know that hawkeye worked for thrown weapons too, I never thought to try
One thing I liked to do when I was in danger of being overwhelmed by various mobs of baddies was to cast the nether spell sleep. This gave me an opportunity to pick them off individually with the bow as opposed to using up a nova blast.
I found three different ways to deal with the Urgoth and divine favour issue.
1) Take the alternate route around by Talendor until you have a moonstone and have opened the moonbridges.
2) Climb the mountain south of the fortress, just south of the campfire and then turn north and enter into the fortress to get the Uriel Dane / Malokan quest. Getting out is easier as you just have to climb the ladder for the guards observation platform then jump over the wall. To enter on the Arindale side there is a place to climb just to the south of the fortress. Your athletics should be at 4 or better to allow backflipping. Note: If your backflipping in place take a small step forward
3) Using a proxy. This is the fastest but most complicated way, you actually get your divine favour
a) Take your Urgoth to the base of the tower in Lake Lohr? and save.
b) Create a new character, either a human or an elf and save.
c) Now load your Urgoth game in multiplayer using LAN. Notice in the bottom right it gives you a choice which character to load.
d) Choose the last saved single player and your human/elf should come up.
e) Start the game and take your proxy up the ladders to the top but don't click on the altar just yet. Save the game overwriting the file you used to create the proxy if your tight on save game slots.
f) Back to single player and load your Urgoth game and then save right away. This is to que it up to be the last save.
g) Once again start a multi player game and using LAN. Load the proxy game at the top of the tower and choose your last saved single character, should be the Urgoth right?
h) Start the game in multi player then save right away in your Urgoth game slot.
i) Now you can start your single game. Click the altar for divine favour, jump on the altar and then onto the tower wall. On the west side the water comes close to the base so you should reach it with a running jump.
Note: If you continue to play in multi player mode from the tower, the game might "forget" you have divine favour if you switch to single later on.
Note: This proxy exploit should be done at the very beginning, on your first trip to Arindale, otherwise it can mess up the later quests you already have in your log.
Any questions??
