Looking for an older RPG

Hi, I recieved my first computer in 1999, so I am looking for some point and click RPG's. Does anyone know of any?

I would strongly suggest you check out Home of the Underdogs. It's a legit abandonware site with tons of RPGs dating as far back as the mid-1980s, though quite a lot date from the 1990s, too.

Some famous "point and click" RPGs which should work on a PC from 1999:

Diablo was released 1997.
Baldur's Gate was released 1998.
Icewind Dale, BG2 and Diablo2 were released 2000.

What exactly do you want from a "point and click RPG" ?
Turn-based strategy or hectic real time action ?
First person or top-down view ?
Many neccessary long dialogues or much monster bashing ?
Freedom to get totally lost or a more linear gameplay ?
Standard pseudo-medieval setting with swords, orcs and so or a different setting ?
... ?

What are the specifications of the computer you want to play the game with ?
(CPU speed, RAM, OS, Graphics Card... )

Although I'm not quite sure what do you mean by "point&click RPG", you might also want to consider Fallout, Arcanum and Planescape: Torment,

I am looking for games that are like Dungeon Siege or Titan Quest.
I did not understand some of the words you use, it is me I am just a dummie, but love a good RPG. I do not like Divine Divinity, cannot understand it.

Next time that you don't understand some technical words, don't feel ashamed to ask for explanations. Nobody here is born with instant knowledge, we have to learn somewhere. It does not mean you are dumb.

Dungeon Siege and Titan Quest are what we call "action RPGs" because the gameplay is based on action rather than on the story. (Of course, this is a basic definition, they have other features and differences, but this is a useful way to distinguish "action RPGs" and "real RPGs".)

So if you are more into action RPGs, you should forget about most of the suggestions that have been made (like Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Arcanum, Planescape Torment, and Icewind Dale).

Go with Diablo and Diablo 2. Most people say that Diablo is the best action RPG ever. (I also believe it was the first one, but am not sure about that.) I am not a big fan of action RPGs so I cannot help you more on the subject, but you can go on the "action RPG" section of the forum to learn about other titles.

Thanks for the nice welcome and I am glad no one minds my not knowing what things mean. I have just bought Diablo and will start with this one. I know some new games are coming out this fall, The Witcher is one, another iss Loki, and then The Hand of God is another and I hope to get them. My sister some years ago sent me the first Dungeon Siege and Strategy Guide as a gift and I just loved it. I assumed wrongly that all RPG's were the same, thanks for letting me know.
I love the forum here and find it very helpful. Thanks again for your wonderful help.

I'd generally agree with that, except (maybe) for the inclusion of Icewind Dale

Yes, there is a pretty good story background, but it is, nonetheless, very heavily based on combat and strategy. You also are able to entirely create your own party, which can be quite a lot of fun, in and of itself.
Personally, I prefer the more story-heavy RPGs, but every so often I'll fire up IWD1, it's lots of fun when you are in a hack&slash kind of mood

I almost made another paragraph for Icewind Dale.

I was not sure where to put it, but finally felt it belonged more to the "real" RPGs than to the action RPGs, although I would not be as polite as you were when describing the story of Icewind Dale. My opinion would be closer to "What? There was a story?"

I'd call the IWD series RPG-flavored strategy titles. They're very linear, and most chapters are focused on a goal/goals that are pretty clear from the start. There is no party interaction, as your party members have no "character;" you generate them, yourself.

Just my POV. From my perspective, an RPG involves at least some ability to wander about and find other objectives unrelated to the plot. There also has to be sustained interaction with the environment, since roleplaying involves something other than dice.

Well yes, I suppose I was polite...

Seriously, you are right, but in comparison to certain newer "RPGs" that shall remain nameless... IWD doesn't look that bad

Besides, when I create my party I usually develop background stories for each member, as well as explanations for how they are linked to one another. From there, it's not very difficult to imagine the conversations they might have. Hell... if I were technically inclined I could already have huge swaths of dialogue for a bunch of recruitable IWD NPCs

Yeah... I can be a bit geeky...

I did not meant that IWD was bad, it was kind of fun, although nothing compared to BG and PS:T. But the story was very cliché and simple.

@Fable, you are much better than me at describing games. Your experience shows.

@Curry, I am not sure how we could define what Maggie called a "point-and-click" game, but I don't think Gothic would fit in that category. I assume that "point-and-click" means that you do pretty much everything with your mouse.

I agree with you 100 %

Indeed, I am currently replaying PS:T and enjoying every minute, to the point where I'm actually "level grinding" just so that I can delay going to the the final sections..... I just don't want it to end *sniffs*
It is a game I would have heartily recommended to Maggie had she not specified that she prefers more action-oriented RPGs.

I know how you feel. I have a friend who is a huge Diablo fan. I bought him the whole Baldur's Gate series for his birthday last year and he did not even finished BG 1. Too slow for him and too much landscapes without monsters and loot.

About the "is IWD a real RPG ?" thing: Icewind Dale is obviously a real rpg from my POV and all gaming magazines and game sites classified it as rpg. Spending more time talking and wandering around aimlessly than fighting the evil guys like in BG isn't really typical for CRPGs.
And IWD definitely doesn't fit into the action-rpg part, since success doesn't depend on the action of your fingers, only brain is neccessary, like in all IE games.
About "What? There was a story?" comments I recommend reading the plot section at Wikipedia. It's nearly twice as long as the BG plot.

Back to the original topic: Might and Magic 6,7 and 8 are also great CRPGs which should work on a computer from 1999 without any problems.
