Vahtacen's Secret quest problem *SPOILER*

Hi I'm having a problem with this quest, possibly because of some sort of a bug and I was wondering if anyone could help...

I've reached the cave where the ancient artifact is supposed to be, and when I push the button, this this in the middle of the room rises, but there is nothing beneath it. Now I understood from the walkthrough that there should be an Elven helmet there, but it's just not.

If anyone could help me please.

I never had this happen to me. I assume you have treied reloading the game from a slightly earlier save and trying again?
Have you ever considered that the sole reason for your existance is to merely serve as a warning to others?
