A little help to get started

Post by Supersonicways »

Hello everyone and greetings from Finland! :)

After stalking in the shadows of this forum for some time I finally decided to register.

I've completed BG1 a couple of times (several years ago) but since I bought the Baldur's Gate compilation yesterday, that includes both BG1&BG2 and their expansions, I've decided to refresh some memories and play through the whole saga :D

I've decided to go with 2 characters. My main one and Imoen. At first I thought I'd make my character to be Elf, F/T but is this unnecessary as I'm taking Imoen along to do the thieving? Would a mere Elf Fighter be better?

And then there's always an option to go solo. I've been thinking to give this a try too. An Elf, F/T might be a good one here, yes? Or does it make the game too hard to have just one character? Do I have to start avoiding battles or can I still check all the places out?

Every reply is greatly appreciated! :)

For the two man party I recommend using a Fighter Cleric, Fighter Mage Cleric or Cleric Ranger (can't do that with an Elf character). In this way you have most of the main classes. You can even consider dualing Imoen to a mage at one point to get all of the main classes. I don't recomend using just a plain fighter, since you then have no (or litle) healing skills in your party. I think that that makes your party more difficult to use.
anyway that's my two cents :)

I prefer full 6-dude parties, because I think the NPC's are one of the highlights of the BG Saga (especially BG2). But you indicate a preference towards a more intimate party, so I'll comment from that premise.

I would pour all of Imoen's thief-points into her Lockpicking and Find Traps abilities, and dual her to a wizard at level 7. Assuming you're cool with not (as effectively) backstabbing or sneaking or pickpocketing, this Imoen frees your main dude from needing to be a thief-type. She'll be able to handle all locked items and annoying traps, use a bow, and provide arcane magicks. With a party of two, the amount of time her thief class is inactive from dualling will be minimal. And lastly, this Imoen maintains continuity with BG2, if that sort of thing matters to you.

Then you main dude can be anything, thief or otherwise. Either a priest-type for healing magicks, or a strong-type who carries around a healthy inventory of medical potions.

Now, we always read around these forums about how the games are solo-able with any class... but imo, BG1 would be annoying without a basher-type, and BG2 would be annoying without a wizard-type, and both would be annoying without the ability to Pick Locks or Find Traps. With Imoen being a Mage/Thief, and your main dude being, say, a Fighter/Cleric, you'd have all the basics covered.

Have fun Super-S, Ways over from Finland!
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

I would go with a Cleric/Ranger can be Half-Elf not Elf though. If you have the expansion Dual Imoen to mage after she gets to level 7 theif. She will make level 8 mage. I would also make her a specialits mage for the extr spell per level. You'll finish with this

Main Character 7/7 Cleric Ranger
Imoen 7/8 Theif/Mage
:) Once again time to give someone the boot to make room for Coran. LOL :)

Play the character you like, the game has been soloed with any class, F/T is actually one of the easier ones.
If you want to play a team consisting of F/T and Imoen I recommend getting her stealth up before dualclassing her to illusionist after 4 or 5 levels, so you can both sneak around unseen when her dualing period is over.

Cleric/Ranger is a good option as you can both use stealth and you have healing. You HAVE to be half-elf. Fighter/thief is indeed one of the easier classes to solo. I tend to use Halfling, but elf is also good. Just have fun whichever you use. There isn't a right or wrong way to do it.

Thank you for your replies! :)

Just started my game today. Went for Cleric/Ranger and will dual Imoen to mage as many have suggested.

Will give a try to soloing game after this play.

Seems that I had forgotten some controls and menus and such but it's all coming back now.

Have a splendid day everyone! I know I will! :D
