Build Strategy ?

Post by joe05 »

I was wondering, do you have a "build strategy" ?
By that, I mean: " have you calculated, what levels you would like per priority
skills/attributes and what levels you could live with in those complimentary skills".

I read posts here before/after playing, trying to soak in your expertise.
Plus, I have prinouts of all the posts/PM sent to threads/PM.

I'm hoping some rubs off on me :-)

I know everyone has a favorite build.
I'm sure you've exhausted all ideas on how to maximize it etc ....

For example, my build is dictated by my game-playing-ability :-)
I like ranged/bow + melee distance/spear ... use magic skills to compliment them

After a little playing/re-do's (LOL), I'm wondering if leveling up really high is counter-productive.
I feel as with my spellcaster(... prior game), which by games end, turned into a melee fighter using a wakazashi with absorb health, my new character will not use a bow and rely on the spear + enchant(... damage STR; absorb health; fortify attack)

Seems, the higher I level, the more health points the enemies receive ?

So, I was thinking(... not my strong suit): " maybe put some MINOR skills in MISC".
Then, say put BLUNT in minor.
Juice up the ebony staff.

Before leveling(... starting at 0/10), buy 10pts in a neccesary MISC skill ... won't affect character level
Ebony staff your way up to the next level OR buy 10pts in a MAJOR/MINOR skill ... level up
Go buy 10pts in another neccesary MISC.

Would this not, in effect, give you more bang for you leveling up buck ?
Get your skills + attributes up without your character level going through the roof :-)
Thus, keeping your character level down/maximized.

Am I making any sense :-)
Or, do you just put your needed skills in MAJOR/MINOR.
Then play the game and let it dictate what you skills raise and when you raise them ?

I don't know what levels my magic(...complimentary) skills should be.
So, I'm guessing I'll over level; again.

Guess I'm trying to find that sweet-spot-build-strategy.
Seems, I might be better off putting some in MISC; just don't know which ones = I'm sure after more playing things will become clear ?

Did not see a philisophical thread on builds ... I know there is no "one way" to build a character
Just wondering, if there is a "best way" to build one.

You don't have to write a thesis if you have figured out "what works best".
Even if you don't play as I, I can still get the nuance/gist of your thinking :-)

I see many threads on gear/weapons/ some strategy, but none have delved into the basic tennants of maximizing a build.

I hope this post is appropriate ... not been covered :-)
Maybe, it's to complicated to explain ?
Best left to each of us as we replay using our favorite character ?

If the thread has already been done, just close it.
If it's not something that can be explained, just say so.
Was just thinking(... probably over thinking) ... somtimes, that's not good (LOL)

Hmmm.. It's late, I've been drinking wine, and I haven't been playing MW lately, but I think I know what you mean... :D

With my most recent character I certainly planned my levelling. What I did was select training in three areas prior to each levelling, two miscellaneous skills and one major/minor. In each training session I increased by ten levels apiece, which give me three "times 5" multipliers. I deliberately trained in only one of my major/minor skills, because that's all you need to actually level, complimented by training in miscellaneous skills so as to increase desired attributes.
If I increased my skills naturally through simple practice I made a note of it, and applied it accordingly.

Those I selected for training depended on the amount of gold I wanted to spend (lower levels being cheaper to train), the availability of higher level trainers, and the attributes I most wanted to improve.

Hope that all makes reasonable sense... :D

I got bored with makng uber characters, so I choose 5 useless major skills put the major as minor and went playing.

As it took a while to level up I received lots of 5x bonuses

Apart from making sure that the major/minor skills match the class of charactr that I'm about to roleplay, the only 'planniing' I do is endurance related. I always make sure I have two endurance related skills in the misc category so that I can boost my endurance early.

I usually customise the class that I'm intending to play in the CS before starting the game, some of the default class set-ups simply don't make sense to me. In fact most of them don't, why have more than one melee weapon as major/minor skills?

DW: maybe I should drink wine :-)
That's what I was thinking three 5X.
You drink wine; I whine.
It might help my play = loosen me up(... can't with my meds)

Ampasand: your uber = me staying alive
But, I get your drift ... just not good enough to try it
Had the restore health srtarted last game = will do it again this time
Might even whack all those NPC to get the sanquine items :-)

Galraen: I still remember your Noober-Neeber analogy.
I always max my END early ... depends on character if I get 3X or 5X
Always use the role/build skills.
Seems I can see 4 skills I really need, then it's " whatever looks good" ... should have put them in MISC ... at least some of them !
Yes, the prefab characters are not good = learned that last time

But, I've noticed that those skills not really needed at 50 or more would be better served in MISC = I can buy them without overleveling
Last game, geez, I think I was in the 50's(... character level).

I noticed the three 5X by accident when I "brain cramped" and forget to up my Security ... could not complete a thieves quest
Decided to buy a MISC before; then security(... MAJOR); then a MISC

Next game I will move some Magic to MISC.
I can see I will add about 8-10 levels just getting them to an acceptable % rate ... would have been better served if they were in MISC
Not sure what I'll put in MINOR ... guess one I may use more often ... 4 not really needed will go in MISC

Sorry for the delay.
Been interior decorating + landscaping ... looks like a jungle
Plus, for some strange reason, I could not steal the glass items ... did in every other game
Now I'm going after the Amulet of Shadows.

Thanks for the tips/help.
I wanted to make sure before giving the strategy a try.
No re-do (LOL).
I will see where my magic levels should be ... if 50 or below, then next game I'll "buy them = level up"

Actually I just realised that I always make sure that I have at least one skill related to each attribute in misc. Even when playing a pure mage I keep a willpower and intelligence related skill in misc.

There's a more sinister reason for editing the class before playing, once a major/minor skill gets to 100, one can edit the class again and swap that skill for one of the misc skills. I've never fully exploited that cheat, but in theory you could get to mind bogglingly high levels doing that.:mischief:

Yes I'm devious , at my most devious when playing an evil mage. Apart from joining the House of Evil (Telvanni) I also use some really cheesy destruction spells.

There are also a couple of mods out there that remove the level cap, but being as the most difficult npc's in the un-modded game are only lvl.48 (Dagoth Ur and Umbra) there's no point in going to ridiculously high levels.

Swordsman - I'll thank you here for both replies to my threads.
Unfortunately, me and the Construction set don't get along ... last time "I tried to use it", I made a mess off things :-(
-----------------------------------------------------

You win :-)
I did another "re-do".
Thanks for all the "help/tips/advice" on how to "build and enchant".
I'm using basically everything that was posted ... plus I noticed leveling errors; both in terms of maximizing the multiplier + where to put skills

I'm going "Bow".
Yep, no backup weapon ... hoping to maximize my build so as to make my bow the sole weapon
Probably not feasible.
Not going to buy or inventory a Spear until it is absolutely neccesary.

Hoping to quit my leveling in the mid 20's to low 30's ?
Thus, keeping the enemy hit points down to reasonable levels.
Coupled with my companion, we should, hopefully, be able to "fight our way through" with bows ?

Just got tired of always resorting to my melee weapon.

To save time, no stealing all the minor stuff(...bottles/forks etc).
Just wrote myself a check :-)
But, the glass goodies + vault, well, we will steal that stuff.
Can't find the darn Mark spell = driving me nuts

Then we start hunting/exploring/questing ... see if what everyone said "sunk in" ... hope my leveling/enchanting makes up for the low character level

I appreciate all the help ... don't mind the re-do's ... best to figure out the "character/build" stuff before I chew up quests ... keeps the game fresh :-)

This time, I added all my companion mods ... In case Hippolyta doesn't work out :-)
No inventory box ... could use some help carrying stuff
