NPC gone - What gives?

Post by Shazir »

Fought the Demon thingy in the basement in Ugoth's Beard - successfully. Then, out of nowhere, a couple of ghasts show up and regardless of the protections provided, the NPC who was under a hold spell left over from the battle just dies and his icon disapears (ergo: not able to be resurected). Can this be prevented? I have tried Dispell - same result. I have surrounded him with Character, NPCs and summoned animals and monsters. The ghasts still get through. As I move toward the final confrontation this NPC is very important as he has been nurtured since the beginning - besides Jacira is broken hearted.

The "demon thingy" has a gaze weapon (like a basilisk) which can turn the victim into a ghast. In other words, the ghasts that appeared "out of nowhere" were actually your own NPCs. Your NPCs did not "disappear"; they were transformed. The demon's ability to do such a thing is not a bug; it's one of the things that makes this particular encounter very nasty and very deadly.

At this point, if you want to save your NPCs, you will have to reload.

You can prevent your party members from being turned into ghasts by using some form of protection against magic (I can't remember exactly what is available in BG1) or by using a Potion of Mirror Eyes, which blocks the effects of gaze weapons. If your character is hit by the gaze weapon, he/she will be held for a few rounds before the transformation into a ghast is complete. I've read that if you cast Dispel Magic while they are still held, you can stop them from being turned into a ghast.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Actually you don't need to be held. You have to look out for the death gaze effect (look in the character record sheet).

There are some very easy ways to kill the beastie, shown below, highlight to read. However, I would advise you to work out your own ways. It is much more fun!!! SPOILERS

Use some method of hiding to get one member of your party to the back of the room leaving the rest upstairs.(Potions, hide, spell of invisibility). Keep out of sight of the guy at the bottom of the stairs.
Shoot all the other acolytes. They won't fight back. When there is only the one acolyte left. bring one character down to initiate conversation and immediately afterwards go back upstairs. Bring a hidden mage downstairs and from a position where he/she cannot be seen cast cloudkill. Aec Laetec will then die without you recieving a single hit. I don't know if this works using Tutu but it does in the standard game
