Which path to take for second class?

Post by darkpark »

I've been playing an Urgoth knight who will be becoming a lord, but sooner or later I'll want to take another class path. I'm undecided about which one to take. He's going to be purely melee/range combat and he will not use ANY magic except for potions and scrolls that he finds. (I'm going to role play him that way.) I'm leaning towards adept/paladin (I know that I'll have to spend some points on celestial and rune magic, but that doesn't mean that I'll have to use them.) I suppose the only other choice might be a rogue/trickster? I suppose the eastern path is impossible since I took the fighter/knight route, right?

A few things to think about..

1. Will you use magic weapons? If so what level? Also, are you willing to do some leveling to get them higher without a learning bonus? Magic Weaponry learning bonus classes are: Celestial, Sorcerer, Battlemage, and the Trickster. Note however that even level 9 in magic weaponry is still "doable" without a learning bonus - so I wouldn't place to much emphasis here.

2. Are you interested in an Eastern class? In particular the +10% double damage heraldry is one of the best heraldries in the game and requires an eastern class. The eastern classes for your character are: Monk, Shugenja, and Buddoka.

3. Would you like to try out some other damage type skill sets? You have available the opportunity for Ninjitsu & Backstab. Monk & Shugenja both have ninjitsu.. The Hunter and the Trickster have backstab. The Buddoka has both.

4. Do you want a learning bonus in Parry? The Paladin has that.

5. Do you want more learning bonuses in basic weapons? Again, the Paladin has that.

6. Do you want to be able to use Heavy Polearms? Look to the Hunter.

IMO..

If you want to use Heavy Polearms then go with the Hunter.. it will also give you the opportunity to try-out backstab (and in combination with sneak). Backstab has some serious limitations.. but against a humanoid type opponent and with some summons occupying it (from a scroll) - it can offer some additional damage (if you hit the opponent in the back).

If you want an eastern class then go with the Buddoka (..unless you want to have the winter shuriken - in which case go with the Monk).

Otherwise - choose the Paladin.

As far as Eastern Classes go: the Samurai is also among them.

Not for him.. he already has a fighter class - the Knight.

Thank you for the hints Scottg. Since the Paladin appeared the most often in your ideas, I went ahead and selected that. :) Although, I was also considering the hunter but he gets bonuses to the heavy polearm skill and I haven't seen any decent heavy polearms except the one from Mog's gang and the one in the tomb of souls.

As for magical weapons, I do plan on using them and I should have stated that my character won't be using any magical spells instead.

Class suggestions

Dragon_kiler, are you more interested in magic or melee damage? I suppose another way to put that is whether you prefer blade or spells. If it's the latter, I would take the Enchantress (If your character is a female, and a member of the Sisterhood, of course.) or Sorcerer. If you have a girl character and if you choose enchantress, you can get War Witch later as your Tier 3 class. If you go with sorcerer, you will get the option to have Wizard as your T3 class. As for melee, I'm stumped, 'cause I played a FE Mage/adept Battlemage/enchantress War Witch for my first char., and a FH Rogue/mage Valkyrie/??? ??? for my current char. The "???" indicates the classes I have yet to choose. I'm thinking of doing Valkyrie/Sorcerer and Wizard, but Valk/Shugenja and Kenjasai intrigues me as well. Or maybe Valk/Trickster Cabalist. But enough about my char. I guess the best suggestion is to play a character you feel comfortable with. That's my advice.
(If you play a melee class, perhaps you can suggest a good melee class progression tree for me.)
