Sigil gas mask in the Naga Temple

I've finally met my match with a stinkin' gate! Trying to get the Eye of Sibyl and can't without a gas mask. The problem is that the "door" at #5 on the walkthrough is actually a gate and didn't open when I released Valdane. Can't find any buttons or levers anywhere. Ideas? I'm playing CE.

Alternate solution....

OK - should have thought of this the first time....

Used all of my adv points to pump up Vitality and so I wouldn't lose them when I died. Ran straight into the center, grabbed the Eye of the Sigil, quaffed a greater heal, turned and ran back the way I came in, jumping to get out. Didn't quite make it, but..... a revive at no cost (spent all the points!) allowed me to get up and get out.

Another reading of the walkthrough led me to the real problem though - not speaking to Valdane long enough. Argh!

It's actually possible to survive the gas, but you have to do it fast, and have some antidotes or crystals of cleansing ready or else the poison will kill you. My brother always gets the sigil without getting the gas mask first, even though he never pumps up his life beyond 120 HP. However, the real problem is that the naga queen will be next to invincible if you don't have the gas mask. Also, once you reach the Vale of Ruin there will be Twisted Sylphs which will make quick work of characters without a gas mask, unless you kill them before they can even do anything.
