why are my npc's and I only getting a small portion of XP now?

I'm early in Chapter 3 of SoA and have noticed that my primary character and my party members are only getting a small portion of XP. This wasn't happening before, but has been going on for some time now. For instance I just offed Roennal at the keep and the dialog said my party had received 50,000 experience points. My level 12 fighter, however, got less than 1,000 added to his existing total. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

BG2 with patch installed from Bioware.

What are your party members and what is the difficulty you're playing on?

Experience is reduced for lower difficulties up to core (with core being unmoddified). The game doesn't seem to display experience properly but the real amount is added to the character sheet.

Additionally I think multiclass characters will use more experience since they technically count as two or more people. I could be wrong on this note though.

a multiclassed character receives the same XP as everybody else, it's just divided evenly between the classes.
