A few things to check first: make sure you have the magic arrow selected and not a normal arrow from your inventory. Make sure you're in sneak mode when you shoot him. If you've used the magic arrow on anybody else before him, the enchantment is gone and it just acts like a normal arrow. If none of those things is your problem, read on...

Apparently the arrow isn't really an instant kill item, it just does lots of damage that is usually enough to kill him. However, if your archer skill isn't great and you're playing on a hard skill level, it might not take him out in one shot. Try searching the forum for "adamus" to read some threads discussing how other people have dealt with that particular problem (but they mostly boil down to "whack him until he dies, avoid the guards and RUN AWAY!!!").
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

Please put SPOILER in a thread title like this--just as the sticky thread requests at the top of the forum. I'll change this one, but you'll be expected to do it, in the future, or your threads may vanish. ;)
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
