need help. ultimate heist glitch.

Ok so i've already spent two days searching for a post with the same problem and i havent found it so if it exists just point me to it. in the ultimate heist quest ive gotten the elder scroll and gone down to the grate in the fire place. in all this i havent been spotted or allerted anyone my sneak is at 91 right now. i walk to the fire place and touch it and the quest updates with the recognition message about ocato the battlemage, but im still in the guard quarters when i clear the message. now when i click on the fireplace or the door to lead downstairs it says i need a key. i've pickpocketed keys from everyone i can in the barracks and none have the key to open the door. was i supposed to pick up a key somewhere and just forgot to? its on the 360

It's been a while since I played but did you use that lever in the Elder Scrolls Library? I think that opens the chute in the fireplace. SPOILER: Save before jumping!!!!

yea, that didnt work but thanks. SPOILER: unless there is another lever that i didnt find, you are talking about the lever that opens the doors to the library, right? Oh well i've tried just about all i can think of, loaded 3 previous saves (before i enter the barracks, before i enter the hall of epochs, and before i start the ultimate heist quest) am i missing something? advice?

Okies, that should do it for anyone - now I went and googled the thing, like I said it has been a long time and I am lost a bit. Now when you come up to that corridor you go right, you pull the lever, go back and again blind guy and a door opened by the lever. Go inside, sit down, get the thingie - go UP the stairs, to the Battlemage's Chambers, sneak past the girl and then go to the fireplace. This was fine right?

Your problem is - your quest DID get updated but you can't go down the thing?

Solution - approach the fireplace and receive the journal update, then approach a guard and allow yourself to be arrested. Pay the fine and you will be transported outside the Prison District, and thus able to continue the quest.

That should work I hope.

I was under the impression that getting caught would make you automatically fail that mission? beau_reese, after getting the scroll, did you go UP the stairs or BACK to the guard chamber where you first emerged from?

SPOILER Go up the stairs when you've recieved the scroll and when you reach the battemage's chamber, USE the fireplace. Then you will fall down back to the dungeons that you first fought your way through. From there, it is easy enough to retace your steps and exit the sewers.

I doubt it would make you fail the mission. Oblivion is the kind of game where you can't fail missions, it was designed so that every single character could complete every quest regardless of the actions they make.

The point is that in this bug you get the quest update, like he indicated up there so afterwards there really is no problem. It is a well known bug, and the solution does work.
