How do you read books..?

I know it sounds dumb, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to read the books I collect. I haven't read any of the letter either, and I'm at the part where I just finished rescueing Scarlet Robe. So I'm pretty far into the game.

Go to option screen (on the pc its the Esc buttun), go to Hero Status, and if im right, there is a tab with Books there, if not, its somewhere around in Hero Status.
Some letters, like treasure clues, can be found in the Inventory menu, in Other items. Same place where you find silver key's.

if your playing the game on xbox you press the back button on the controller and the books are in the logbook option, if your on the computer i dont know
