Strategy: The sorceror and metamagic (I have questions)

Post by Claudius »

This is intended to be a nebulous discussion to discuss sorcerors and metamagic (at least the thread is open to such talk should anyone walk by)

My specific questions are regarding what meta-magic feats for a sorceror. Both in general and specifically for Quara at levels 12, 15, 18 (she took Craft Arms and Armor at 9).

I think the feats in question are empower spell, extend spell, maximize spell, Quicken Spell, persistant spell

I'll make some comments here...and I am curious what other players think.

Empower & maximize - I think it depends what spell (level) you are talking about. For example your 5th level slots are probably better as empowered fireballs than maximized MM (I don't play hardcore so I don't got to worry about bad AI killing my party). But Maximized Icestorm at 9th level is probably pretty nasty. What is the use of maximize? Doesn't empower get the job done?

Extend and persistant - can you seriously have displacement permanently cast? That would be sweet. But for the 10 minute per level buffs if they are extended they last a REAL long time. Within the mechanics of the game considering that you can rest to the point that you feel non-imersed or cheating an extended spell is decent too.

Quicken - Basicly your big time trading spell effectiveness with the advantage that you can empty your lower level spells either very fast or in combos. In huge fights it could be good but if your role is a steady 2 offensive casts per monster group fight you almost want to conserve your spells and give the melee fighters a chance to excel (of course you get some kills too and help buff etc) Also with potential bad AI I fear my chars would burn all their spells immediately on the first pack or so of minions before getting to the main event. I don't like the puppet mode one bit although I do strategically choose NPCs to control sometimes (to cast a needed spell or get more sneaks attacks for example).
Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.

It completly depends on the playstyle of your caster. If you are a sword weilding eldritch knight, then your arcane abilities are going to be used primarly to buff yourself. Therefore extend spell would be of greatest value. If you are a backstabbing trickster, quickened invisibility+backstabbing might be your main arsenal. If your goal is to cast fireballs and lightning bolts all day long, you will need empower/maximize spell for extra damage and extra CASTINGS of your favorite offensive spells. If you like to summon all kinds of pets to distract enemies while you pepper them with arrows from safety, maybe persistent expeditious retreat/haste will give you valuable mobility.

Moral of the story, pick the feat you will use the most.
