Considering buying the game

Post by Ulfang »

I have a feeling a played a demo of this a long time ago and found it interesting but didn't keep me entertained enough to want to buy the game when it came out. It's buy the Wizardry team isn't it? I always loved the Wizardry games and for the time they seemed to be the only CRPG system that actually made proper use of Thieves :)

So a couple of questions about the game:

Is it recommended? I seem to remember the game was also multiplayer? How is that and is the game aimed more at MP than SP?

Can you have a high resolution setting? As the game is getting on a bit now I'm worried I'll be stuck with 800x600 and can't cope with that anymore? Can you get a higher resolution?

i can answer that the res is a max of 1024x768

i dont know about mp

but there is a great disersivication of character building in the full game i never tried the demo so i wouldnt know how it went i jus know that the full version has plenty to explore and pc building is unlike any other rpg ive played to date

as far as being put out by the wizards the credits only show dreamcatcher and heurastic park

i know dreamcatchers is very good (i have quite a few of there games) i just hate they never went anywhere with enigma

1st off - its a good game.

2nd - get the CE version.

3rd - DON'T play an Urgoth race or summon Deathlords.

4th - While thieving can be part of the game, it isn't significant considering that any class character can either (disarm and unlock) OR (bash) chests. There are no other locks to pick or traps to disarm in the game. Still, don't let that dissuade you, there is always the thief series to go to (or perhaps the new Assassin's Creed will have that). What this game does have is a rather excellent rpg class progression, very good melee, good magic combat, good graphics (surprisingly), and a decent story line with a lot of entertaining playable hours.

5th - The highest resolution I can manage without a fairly simple hack is 1280 X 1024. Apparently you can go a lot higher than that with a simple hack (..search through the forum for that information).

6th - IF you are using Vista then disable the UAC to play the game.

7th - Multiplayer is apparently a bit "bugged" (search the forum for more information), but the game however is completely oriented on a single person experience.

I think it was worth every penny of the $20 US that I spent for the CE version.

Thanks Scott .. now .. what's a CE version?? ;)

As for the Thief issue I was referring to I was just saying I enjoyed the old Wizardry RPG's because it made full use of the Thief class. I don't mean I want to play that class in this game. I'm quite happy to just bash chests :) I do have all the Thief series btw ;)

Not the Wizardry team, but the lead designer was D.W. Bradley who was the driving force behind Bane of the Cosmic Forge and (I think) Crusaders of the Dark Savant. He also made Wizards and Warriors.

Dungeon Lords is a good game, but the original was bugged to hell, and despite several patches was still bugged. When they finally brought out the final bug fix they didn't make it available for download but sold it as the Collectors Edition, completely screwing everyone who bought the original game. And they still didn't get rid of all the bugs, hence the advice not to play an Urgoth. I swore I'd never buy another game by Dreamcatcher or Heuristic Park because of their corrupt ways, and I never will.

Ahh I thought DW Bradley was behind all the Wizardry games. I also remember Wizards and Warriors which I enjoyed at the time. Ahh got it now the Collector's Edition ;) I'll bear that in mind if I decide to get it.

I had a similar experience with Gothic 3 .... absolutely terrible for bugs. They've fixed them now more or less but a lot of people couldn't play the game at all for weeks and maybe longer.

It wasn't so much the number of bugs that annoyed me, unfortunately that happens with darned near every game these days. It was the gall of trying to force customers to pay full price again for the bugfix that ticked me off.

Quite right Bugs are a major issue with games these days. Never used to be like that!

I'd point out that The Witcher didn't have any noticable bugs to speak of (although I believe there wasa problem with Act 5) and they had released 2 patches within the first week after release which was quite impressive.

Ooops ... back to topic ;)

CE = Collectors Edition (a.k.a. version 1.5)
