Fighting Rats
Does neone have a better way for fighting those dum feral, sewer, and rabid rats than just using the overhead chopping attack? I just get on a higher area, like the top of the gates in FGM and shoot arrows or fling throwing knives at them until the town guard comes to help. (The gates I'm referring to are those fences with the wooden door outlines that u can stand on if u jump forward at them.)

Are too many overwhelming you when you are wounded? I had that problem in the sewers and saved the game frequently in case that happened. You can just kill them with standard sword hits. Thats what I did. I never knew about the overhand chop.
Later you will fight a lot of enemies that come in overwhelming numbers. Almost any character can benefit from enough ranks in arcane to cast blast nova effectively. It saves time especially when you are attacked by 20 poison snakes every 45 seconds
Poison cloud is another option using nether magic.

Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.

Im wearin the lit chain mail, mage hat, and leather boots, gloves, and belt, equipped with a wooden staff and a short bow. i also have a warriors cuff (? I'm not sure.) Its the silver bangle thingie with blue stones in it. and i have a battleshield as well. my prob is that those stupid rats always atack my leather boots and i'm left barefoot more oftn than not. any tips on that? (besides blocking)

It won't matter too much what you have on your feet since it is so little armor. If they are dissolving take them off. When you have high enough light armor try raising your lt armor to at least 3. I think you need only 2 ranks in medium armor to wear chain boots with no penalty and the rats will only degrade those slowly. You can fix them at the traders in between 'missions'.
You could also try the repair skill if that is available to mages but I think that is a waste because eventually you want to be in the heaviest armor that isn't to expensive xp to fit into. That armor will last you on missions and you can always carry spairs.
So you might be barefoot untill you can afford the right items and skills.
PS get the staff of scaris when you get to fargrove. Much better then wooden staff. Or use goblin staff if it does much damage (the sleep doesn't work too well)

dexterity raises strike which is the chance to hit things (some people hit a wrap around bug at 100)
agility raises speed (which gets capped at 250) and parry (uncapped)
You might not have enough pole weapon ability to use the staff or else strength. Then it would drop strike and speed by a fair amount.
Never equip items that give you a penalty (unless it has a killer magic effect that actually works in the game eg reflects spells back or something)
