Question about Multi Class Mage

Post by starhawk »

I'm using the multi class for the first time. I have a mage/thief and a fighter/mage in my party of 6. These are the only two that are multi classed. I gave both an intelligence of 18 and used the charisma and wisdom to buff up the the fighting attributes. The problem is that both characters are not able to use their spells. They are both up to level 4. I checked the spell book and the spells are memorized. Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? I installed only icewind dale and not any expansions. The single class cleric is memorizing his spells perfectly. Any help would be appreciated.

Are those characters by any chance wearing armor? IIRC, in the rules that IWD uses mages aren't allowed to wear anyh kind of armor if they want to cast spells.

If this is the case, then you can rather easily overcome it by removing armor when you want to cast spell, cast a spell, and then equip the armor once again.

Yep, I'd say it's armor. There are a couple sets of randomly-available chainmail useable by fighter-mages, but other than that you will have to use bracers, robes, and spells to protect yourself unless you want to be a quick-change artist as Kipi described.

I guess its all right be a quick-change artist. I've actually seen a live magic show where this magician changes his robes in about a second.
