The demo
The demo
I just downloaded the demo, one big file (good thing I have ADSL). It looks promising, and the elminster speech part is good. But I imgine his voise to be a bit different though. The voice kinda lack the immortal wisdom and experience feel.
I don't know if anyone noticed, but the past videogame clip part is actually in Japanese!!!

You are absolutely right about the Elminister voice part. It is done pretty good, but it a shame they portrayed him in that manner. He should have a completely different type of vocabularry. This is a guy that is always a bit jolly and laid back, but here he is dead serious. Shame, but they might fix it in the game.
I wonder why the original PoR stuff is in Japanese?

I think that the word "demo" is very misleading. I take it that we are both talking about the "bink" movie. I am sorry if you got your hopes up.
As far as I know, there is NOT any form of playable "demo" available.
This ofcourse doesn't mean that the movie isn't interesting to watch.

I have to agree that the coming year is going to be a hard one. Just think of the time that we have to spent away from work and our loved ones, just to play these awesome games. Personally, I am more interested in NWN and PoR, as these will bring something new.
The Icewind Dale expansion is probably going to be cool, but it doesn't have the potential that these other games have. I just hope that they don't get postponed anymore.

Yea true. The bew 3rd edition is going to be cool. Looking at some shots the new ice wind dale looks more like BG2 then the BG engine the first one used. It might of been then 800x600 rez that made it look better. I dont know.

The Icewind Dale expansion, is not going to bring anything seriously new. They'll probably update the original engine with features that were used in BG2. This doesn't mean that it is going to be a bad game. I really liked Icewind Dale, so I might play the expansion. If I was, however, forced to choose, then I would choose for PoR and NWN.
I would choose PoR because SSI has shown in the past that they are capable of producing excellent D&D (AD&D) games. If they can live up to expectations then PoR is going to kick some Interplay ass.
NWN is an interesting game as they are going to introduce the DM feature in the game. If they do this accurately, then this is going to be a cool game.
All in all, 2001 is going to be a very sweet year.

I just have to say this.
SSI had the AD&D licence and produce just below the average games.
Because of that i am going to whait for a review of the game before I think about buying the thing.

I have to say that you are partially right about the games that SSI has produced in the past. However it is a bit overgeneralizing. We are currently working on a big piece of AD&D computer history. SSI has produced close to 25 AD&D games in the past.
It is unfair to say that they are all weren't any good. There is a pretty good reason why everyone still praises the original "gold box" series.
Descent into Undermountain, Birthright, and Blood & Magic also weren't any good. I think it is with reason why SSI decided to stop producing AD&D games.
If we look at the screenshots and other published information, then we have to conclude that the game has a lot of potential. Is it fair to expect the same as BGII, probably not. You have to realize that Interplay had the opportunity to work majorly on other areas as the game engine was finished.
We will just have to wait and see.

I think one should not forget that PoR is more an AD&D game then BG2. Where in BG2 one could turn off feedback levels to make it almost a real-time strategy game, PoR is true to the spirit of AD&D.
With the new edition rules I think it marks the beginning of a new breed of (second generation?) AD&D-games. To compare it with BG2 would not be giving the game the credit it deserves.

Just wanted to touch on a few of the posts here.
Drakron: What SSI games have you played to say all the games they made are below average? I'd have to say the story in Curse of the Azure bonds alone was far greater than BGII and a good tie with BG.
The Elminster voice: How could he be jolly when a horde of undead are being generated in the very city that he is holding a council meeting in? I'd have a pretty serious tone in my voice too
Descent to Undermountain and Blood and Magic were done by Interplay, not SSI. Birthright, I believe, was done by Sierra, again, not SSI.
Well said Deacon.
Speaking from experience by playing the new pool, the game kicks ass

I was talking about the "DARK SUN", "AL-QUIN" and "REVENLOFT" ones, I dind´t have a pc at the time of "azure bounds" but i like to play that one because I like the ideia of a saurian paladin (I must found that book for reading).
In a article I found a link here posted that SSI used the same engine time and time and time again. even Bioware who were new at this(The made a very bad mechworrior-like game before goin in for AD&D were they revive the type of game) make a great job in BG and improved the engine for IWD and BGII. unlike Heroes of Might and Magic that by using the same game engine whit minor changes made a comercial suicide.
Before I end, I played BG ways afther being release, and I belive at the time that I was not going to like it, But afther 5 minutes I was amazed by the game itself, the same may happen with PoR but I am goin to hold on for a review.
And sorry for trouble you all but I have "The Fall of Myth Drannor" module and in there somethings are stated diferent from what you have in your Page about the fall of the City. probley because the module is newer(it´s for a Arcane Age) that the one you have(it´s likely to be from "Ruins of Myth Drannor" that is older) . If you what I can post here some of the details of the city fall.(I can´t work my Email)

Let me start out by correcting a few bits:
Descent into Undermountain (Interplay), Blood & Magic (Interplay), and Birthright (Sierra) were sucky games.
SSI hasn't been the only one that has produced mediocre games in the past. The problem that SSI had in the past was that the things they published weren't innovative anymore. I played most games "old" AD&D games when I was bit younger than I am now, and at those times I enjoyed playing those games. Looking at everything that is available about the new Pool game, then I would say that we don't have to worry about anything.
Elminster's voice just is not what I ever expected his voice to be. The voice sounds more like something that I would associate with Khelben Blackstaff.
I am very interested in the correct history on the fall of Myth Drannor. If anyone has any corrections on what I posted on our website, then please go ahead and correct me.

The fall, yes it´s true that the Passing of the Coronal(the leader)Eltargrim makes the beginning of the End, but was the Murder(unresolved) of his heir and last of the line, his nice Aravae that starts the Problems that make city Fall. The Title of Coronal is given by drawing a Elfblade called Ar´Cor´Kerym (Ruler´s blade in elvish) so a sucersor must be chosen but no Elf could draw the blade that like Moonblade Kills the unworthy. afther the death of many Elves some of the non elf who lived at the city made their way to the Rule Tower were the Blade was, they were stoped at the entrace by the Elves. they tried to force they way up the tower but someone Cast a mighty spell destoying the tower and all inside. The blade and High Mages were untoched by the spell and hover above were the tower once stood, but the damage was made the distrust among races was now fully shown.
The High Court Mage, the Srinshee them seeing that none had provend worth, Drew the blade herself, but even before she put her hand on the Hilt, mighty spells were cast at her to prevent her of beconing Coronal, but she did draw the blade, but seeing what Myth Drannor was becoming she insted sayed that wend the people have proven their worth she would return then she, the blade and high mage vanish.
It was that events that prevented Muth Drannor from realizing the treat that the Army of Darkness was.
The army of Darkness was lead by a trio of nycaloths who have been imprisiond by the Elves in a Prison Above Myth Drammor. that trio had been summoned long ago by a Netherese archwizard looking for some of the nether scrolls who had been stolen long by the elves. The prison was invisible to all and prevented the trio from escape but like all prisons it had a key. the only key to freeing the trio was when a "Red Dragon that never knew malice or greed in its heart flies over the Coronal´s throne". a mage of the name of Saeval Ammath had procured a dragon´s Egg and used magic to change it´s nature, the dragon was a Red in apreance but he possed the Heart of a Gold dragon, the Drangon name was Garnet and he and the Mage became good friends. One night the dragon flew over Nyth Drannor alowing the trio to escape, them afther 1800 years seeing the city grew and prosper they only had a purpose. To destroy Myth Drannor they raise a army of orcs, giants, and other evil creatures, sommuned creatres of the lower planes and they move in to Cormanthor destroying all in their path.
The war lasted betwen 711 and 714, it costed the lives of the first Harpers and the elf (lady steel) that created they(they badge[even today] was her house Insignia), a chosen of Mystra (Symrustar Auglamyr), many elven villages, the city it self, and many more...
One of the last battle was betwen the last of the nycaloths and Captain Fflar, a unknown, even today, hero that lead the defendors of the city during it´s last days, were both vanished.Even whit the death of nycaloths the Army did not stop, the last suvivers left the city.
This is a very short desciption of the fall there is a lot more that happed
