Fog'o'war and map problem

Post by Julian »

Solved the problem: 3D Acceleration seems to have done the trick :)

Greetings

Its been ages since I have posted here now, but I still have all the confidence in this community.

Today I installed BGII-SoA on my new pc, ofcourse it came with troublesome Vista, Im not really comfortable with this OS so I dont know if it is whats causing my problems or not.

When moving around and revealing new areas of the map the black fog has fairly big squares, I mean they are over half the size of my chars height, rather ugly and game ruining for me. Also my map is all black, only the "notes" show up on the map.

I dont have any patches or Tob(could if i wanted) installed. I also have not done any tinkering in the configuration since I never really did it before and didnt have this problem then.

Its a laptop with a Centrino Duo and Nvidia geforce 8400M GS incase anyone is wondering

Just a quick update.

I installed ToB and the patch for it. The problem still persists. But I came over a quick fix by accident. While smashing my keyboard in frustration I hit the windows button, when I alt tabbed back in to the game the problem was gone. Though I have to do this each time I save etc. The map is still a litte weird, I kinda have to drag the green box as a eraser to so that the parts of the map I have explored shows up. This has to be done each time I open the map. In addition to this there are many black boxes around many interactable things in the game(items "clicky things" +++)

So in short, I have found ways to fix the issues temporarly atleast though a permanent fix would be appriciated. Hope this might also help anyone who encounters this problem some time :)

I do not own Vista, and have not seen BG in any incarnation been run on one, so I guess I can't confirm if it is.

I have helped troubleshoot Vista + g/cards + Direct X + older games though, and I must say that DX10 that comes as a part of Vista seems to be a major issue with older games. It may crash many games until the g/card is reinstalled (same driver version) and (re)installing DX9 seems to help; until the next time Vista decides to patch itself up with a minor fix pack.

Your video issue might be due to this, but I think we'd like to hear what results your "BG Config" tweaking with the video settings yield. Some of those options, when disabled might just do the trick.

My game is running fine now.

I cranked the resolution up and turned on 3D accelertaion. I didnt have to do this when running on XP, dont like to smooth looks on BG, loses some if its old charm then

Yeah, I get what you mean. Which is why it pays to keep an old machine you can bring out for nostalgic purposes... although it does take up space that other people in the house will badger you to clear up!
