Do I need Ike's Wardstone

Usually when I take on the Demonknight at the top of Durlag's tower i pick up the wardstone from Ike's dead body.
This time however I killed the Demonknight before he killed Ike.
Ike isn't talking to me.
The question is, is the wardstone inportant and if I have to kill him to get it, will I lose reputation?

I just completed the tower and didn't need the wardstone from Ike. All the wardstones you can buy, are afaik fake.

I discovered the answer to the rest of my question by trial and error. Tried pickpocketting it, failed, he attacked me. I lost 10 reputation points.
Now that I know it isn't needed, I won't do that again.
