The first time I played I had gotten to the point where I had returned to Athkatla after rescuing Imoen from Spellhold before my PC crashed, so I know that Jan gets summoned home. However, in the first game this happened before I left for Spellhold, because I took longer getting the money together.
This time, I'm ready to go to SpellHold (just left the Graveyard after doing Aran Linvail's last quest) and Jan has not been summoned home. Will he get summoned home if my party is in the areas associated with Spellhold? Or will it happen after returning to Athkatla? Did not want to lose him during these line of quest.
If he does get summoned while in Spellhold or associated areas, is there a problem just killing time before reporting back to Linvail, so this event takes place before leaving for Spellhold. If I remember, he was summoned about 2 weeks after I got him, and I have had him this time for 12 days.
Thanks in advance

I don't know if Jan does get summoned if you go to Spellhold, it would be ridiculously bad game design if he did.
Spend as much time before going to Spellhold as you like Sonny, if that possibility bothers you, there's no time limit.
The only down side is that if you do all the side quests first, as I usually do, then Imoen just doesn't cut it when you meet her again. As in my last run through, when I had Nalia who was a 15th, almost 16th level mage, there was no way I was going to trade her in for a 12th level mage.

I've actually done one or two fewer side quest this time. The thing that I did different this time is I've sold off a lot of the things I carried around or stashed in the first game. I've been writing down where I sell things in the event I do need to buy them back later. That's how I've been able to raise the money quicker.galraen wrote:

Plus this time I did some quest for a guy named Renal Bloodscalp which I did not do the first time. The last quest gave me a big chunk of money. Put off doing the Fighters Stronghold this time.
I agree, it would seem like bad programing to have him summoned back home at that point in the game, but I think I'll wander around for a few days to see if he gets summoned home before taking off for Spellhold.
Thanks again.

I think this is the way it works. Jan will be summoned home when his timer expires, as long as you are in Athkatla. If the timer expires while you are outside the city, the messenger will appear the moment you return to Athkatla. This also applies to the timers of other NPCs.
By the way, your use of the term "summoned home" reminds me of the time that Oral Roberts declared that God would "call him home" if he did not meet a particular fundraising goal.
