Is there a simple outline of the order in which the quests and sub quests should be performed? Or a printable checklist? So that you don't accidentialy end a chapter or section before you have done everything you could? The walkthroughs are great but I get lost in the complexity.

I do not at all recommend doing this, but there's a way:

List of Quests by Act - Witcher Wiki - a Wikia wiki

It's much more enjoyable to finish the game at least once doing it your own way, before looking up the things you may have missed.

I agree, if you want this game to be played at maximum enjoyability just play through once or twice and then if you want to power-play then use the link

You can also refer to Gamepressure's guide. Pretty decent guide, in my opinion.
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price
