bethesda (TES) and bioware (KotoR, jade Empire)
Jade empire is, in my opinion, second only to morrowind. but lionhead is good too...

"Of humble birth, he entered the Emperor's service in the lowly status of courier. Dispatched to Balmora in the waning years of the Third Era, he arrived in Morrowind, ignorant of the role he was to play in that nation's history."

Actually, I think Bethesda creates at best mediocre RPGs. Oblivion had one redeeming "quality": its graphics. For the rest, it's an oversimplified, bland game.
While I enjoyed Fable, I wouldn't describe Lionhead as "one of the best RPG makers." Fable was a very simple game. Very polished, though. I really enjoyed interacting with the NPC's.
As for greatest RPG maker, I think Bioware does a great job. Sometimes hard to draw a line between them, but Black Isle did awesome work.
Troika made great games, but they weren't always appreciated. A shame though.

I truly hope Oblivion was the exception and not the rule. Even though I don't expect it to be as good as 1 & 2, I still hope Fallout 3 will be a decent RPG. And Oblivion wasn't really that bad overall, it was just an awful RPG. Plenty of fun to be had just killing/stealing/exploring (well I didn't enjoy it that much even on that level, but I can see the appeal).GawainBS wrote:Actually, I think Bethesda creates at best mediocre RPGs. As for the best: Black Isle. No question. Fallout 1 & 2 + PS: T make for one HELL of a resume in the business.
When you compare a game to Oblivion, God kills a kitten.
Black Ilse (Planescape: torment, Icewind dale) and Bioware (Baldur's gate 1/2, KOTOR, Neverwinter nights) are IMO the best RPG makers, though I like Bioware's older work better, it was more intelligent and creative.
I like Bethesda, but I don't think they have proven enough to be worthy of a title like 'best maker'. I love morrowind, but didn't like Oblivion. And even if Oblivion was a mistake, that only leaves Morrowind to their record (and daggerfall and arena, but I never played them).

Black Isle was really great, considering all the special games they made, Fallout, PST, IWD and they had their hand in the BG games.
I don't regard Bioware as a good rpg maker, for me it rather looks like a a division of Interplay for mainstream high budget projects for the masses with the main focus what's good for marketing like innovative looking graphics or other unneccessary features.
But the best rpg maker for me was New World Computing, they made at least seven great Might and Magic games.

Meh, disagree with you there. Just on the graphics part. I would have been totally satisfied with morrowind graphics in oblivion, as graphics are never essential to a video game. Never. Hell, I would have been satisfied with Daggerfall or Arena style graphics. Just as long as I could see what I was doing.bosmer000 wrote:i do agree that morrowind was way better then oblivion and i could c why some poeple dont like oblivion.it should have been like morrowind but with more stuff and of course graphics but instead they actully took stuff out of the game.
Obsidian makes some pretty good RPG's. A few glitches or the ending cut off due to time constraints are among the only problems I've ever seen.
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

BioWARE. The only company that consistently produces the party-based, SP campaigns with a good story, great character development and the user created protagonist of either gender. Except for NWN1 of course. But everyone can slip.
Kudos to Obsidian for making NWN2. But I don't like what they are developping now - at least their officially announced project, what was that, Alien, Alpha protocol something? What a bummer.

I just posted something similar,
hey, I just posted something similar on the main threads. At least the part about what makes a good rpg... I'm partial the NWN myself. The games have always impressed me ever since the first one.
Heres what I posted earlier:
Heya everyone,
I need some help with a survey I created. It's geared towards RPGs and LARPs. It will help me complete a project I've been working on for a couple years now. So if you have the time please help me out and take it!
The survey:

Thank you for your time,
Benji
PS - If you complete the last question a free .pdf of the game will be given to you.
