Using non-Jedi NPCs: is this a sound strategy?

As a newb to KotOR I, I kinda just thought the way to go was to get as many Jedi in the party as possible. After all, they're Jedi, they should be the best to have around, right?

But I'm wondering, can non Jedi hold their own as NPCs? Carth, Zaalbar, and Mission seem really cool, and I was at least considering keeping Carth for the long-term (he's doing well so far with two blasters for me).

To an extent. Mission and T3 are useful for skills, certainly. Carth and Zaalbar are interesting choices though.

Having effectively completed the game first time through using Mission and Zaalbar (except when the game forced me to use others), I'd say that they can more than hold their own. I had Mission concentrate mostly on ranged weapons, and Zaalbar on melee, and there are some extremely tasty melee weapons available later that make Big Z a killing machine.

I used Carth early on with two blasters and it worked great. :)

Later I used Canderous for ranged and Zaalbar for melee. It was very effective.

I usually base it on who has the best skills for the most powerful weapons I have.:mischief:

I'm sure all combinations can be effective if you match skills and weapons.

Good Luck ;)

I used Mission repeatedly for her skills in the early and midgame, but increasingly relied upon a mix of my NPC, another jedi, and Canderous. A properly optimized Canderous is a killing machine, even if he lacks mind tricks.

Canderous is great- especially once he generates the 4 life every 3 seconds keeps him alive for a good time- also i like using carth with double blasters or zaalabar though i hate mission a kid annoys me she is emo

Exactly. With Zaalbar's strength and Mission's dex, they're excellent for bladed weapons and ranged weapons respectively. Zaalbar isn't much for defense, but he's an offensive tank and with his high constitution, can take a lot of punishment without going down.

HK-47, fully repaired, is quite a powerful ally. Like Canderous, he will have a passive life regeneration. HK-47 also gets a nice dex boost and can use droid upgrades, such as flamethrowers and shield disrupters. Which, if managed properly, are just as powerful as jedi abilities.

T3-M4 can also use droid upgrades, but he won't be as great with a blaster or have life regen. He can make up for this by adding all the skills you will ever need. However, you can probably get by in the game easy enough with HK-47's skills.

It should be noted that while Mission brings skills to the table, she also gets really high levels of Sneak Attack. Which can be exploited to yield high amounts of damage upon the enemy.

Zaalbar does make a remarkable tank.

I can't think of a practical use for Carth. He doesn't seem to have any advantages over your other NPC's--no skills, no sneak attack, no life regen. Which I think kind of sucks, since he is the principal character for the female PC's romance. You could always use the in-game bug to turn Carth into a jedi, though.

To be honest, its the type of mission you're about to do really, if you are going to break into some sort of base, you should take someone with strong combat abilities, if you're sneaking into a base, take t3m4 (or whatever it is) , he can hack into the computer system , and open all doors etc...

I know this is slightly off-topic, but I've been doing some searching of the forum threads and can find no mention of this... can you point me in the right direction?

(thanks Caden!)

If you're going to take advantage of this bug (I personally would not, it's very cheesy), I'd make Mission a Jedi. It's already been mentioned how useful she is because of her skills, imagine adding in some Force Powers and a Lightsaber!

Ehhh... I've been through the game (and II) so many times I'll try anything once for a thrill. :D
