What is the hardest battle?

Post by jdougan1 »

Now that I have finished, I am curious to know what people think was the most difficult battle in the game.

Strangely enough, I have to go with the "get the demon heart" battle in the planar sphere quest. I just could not seem to get through this battle, and eventually ended up having to reduce the play difficulty to get through it. It was far more difficult (though less complex) for me than the final battle in hell, as well as some of the other tough spots.

Did anyone else have trouble with getting tye demon heart? Or did I miss some really easy solution?

Easiest way is to pick pocket it from a djinni when you cast limited wish! The planar sphere demon level can be made easier by only going as far as you need to get the heart of the demon to the right of the ramp. Need to fight one salamander and about 4 Imps 4 Quasits and the D'nairi.

This subject has been canvassed before on the forum so if you are interested take a look at previous posts or search for hardest/battles. It is quite revealing in that it seems some people/parties have very different experiences as to the most difficult. - Curdis

Keep in mind, my choice is not due to difficulty, but more on frustration, and low level.

D'arnise Keep. At the time, I had only gained one level per character (lvl 7 average) and were fighting mass amounts of annoying trolls. Those things are like a planet killer. Unrelentless son's-of-bitches that just don't die! It took me four days to complete the quest because of the time spent on trying to kill Trolls.

I am only now in chapter 3, but by far the hardest battle so far has been the Twisted Rune. I don't know how many times I had to reload for that battle.

The demon heart I was caught by surprise the first time but after reloading and summoning a few friends to help it was easy. Skeleton warriors are by far the best critters you can summon.

Heh, heh. I loved the twisted rune battle. Great fun.

Still, I wasn't expecting the battle with the bandits in the sewers to be so tough. They weren't the toughest opponents, but they did catch me by surprise. It was hilaroius and the battle spread all over the sewers thanks to their confusion spells on my party. Since they were practically the first creatures I had run into down there, the scene quickly turned to chaos, with opponents everywhere. Of course, the sword and spell sure made sense of the chaos in the end.

Kangaxx, the demi-lich was my toughest opponent, cause I did this battle the hard way. It was the only battle I had to retreat from. But it was fun after all, figuring out your own strategy.

I'm not quite through the game yet (just exited the Underdark), but I can't really imagine anything being quite as difficult as the Twisted Rune. That was tough. I stumbled across it by accident, and got my ass kicked all over the place. Just what were they all about anyhow? Never was explained.

When doing things the "hard way" my toughest battle without doubt was Firkraag the Red Dragon. I encountered him at a pretty low level and it was a battle that took me many many reloads. Not only did he use his powerful claws and teeth to rip me up, he constantly used that annoying Wing Buffet...along with a few different breath weapons to send my characters crashing to the ground.....ohhh and not to mention his AC-3 and his high resistance to weapons and magic......

I don't know why no one mentions Irenicus as a hard battle...i thought the hardest battle is when u fight him in suldenesser, when he's sucking the life out of that tree..minsc and imoen both died...i thought kangaxx and the twisted rune were hard but not too bad...especially w/ crom feayr..just go berserk and you immune to almost everything including kangaxx's annoying imprisonement spell

Wow, you had Crom Feyer when battling Kangaxx?!? I could never wait that long. Kangaxx was nearly impossible before I read the strategies. Only thing I could do was imunity to abjuration and hope he didn't attack anyone else.

That really shows how different people have different experiences. I thought the Irenicus battle in suldenesser was one of the easier of the "hard" battles. I had a gate scroll, dumped the demon right on top of him, and sat back to watch. I was worried, of course, that the demon might turn on me after Irenicus, but we were all swept into hell before I had to consider that...

Took a snipe at the Twisted Rune...total defeat..decide to attempt it later when my character level up.
The demon heart was real frustration for me when I attempted it in level 10 paladin....all my 5 nps were killed, leaving me the only character alive with the rod of resurruction to save them

Hardest that I won ... was probably the first time I ran into that pack of bandits by the hidden door in the sewers. I had a hellish time. Took me 2 hours.

The time with my new party was so simple, they got owned. I ran(all chars were hasted) Valyagar and Yoshimo in, backstabbed the mage (brought him to badly wounded). My sorcerer ran up and tossed breach on him to knock his spell prots off. Jaheria cast insect swarm to disable the clerics, eventually killing off the mage with that spell.

My sorcerer cast confusion. Then the hammer, my fighters, Mazzy, Keldorn, Valyagar ran in with elemental help and wasted them. one casualty.

Otherwise, well lets just say, I haven't won twisted rune yet ; ( Though I'm getting closer....

Wow, nobody mentioned this one, the Shadow Dragon. He was by far the one that made me reload the most times. Even when I did finally kill him, I still had to resurrect two of my characters. I say this, because I fought him many times even AFTER looking over various strategy guides to killing dragons. Although I did look at the guides on this site for places in a level or what to do sometimes, the Shadow Dragon was the only NPC that I had to look for information to beat. I think the main reason he is tough, is that he dispels summoned creatures even before you talk to him. Therefore you can't use creatures to tank him, and any warriors will be thrown to the ground repeatedly by his dragon breathe.

Forgot to mention he had a high resistance to melee attacks unlike the rest of the dragons who were susceptable to my two warriors slashing at them.

I found the dragons really easy. I just stood out of range, and casted cloudkill on them. Once that was done, I sent in a wizard eye, with four nishruus, and then pelted him with magic missiles. I beat all three Dagons I had to fight with just Nalia. Talk about a confidence boost.

Now that I'm done, I'll mention my hardest battle. The jurney through Suldenesslar. Too many damn golems and liches for my likeing. I had to reload so many times, because they kept targeting my PC. Oh well, every other battle I did was easy.

Funny - I never fought either the Shadow Dragon or did the Twisted Rune. Why? Because I didn't have a quest to do it, and didn't want to spoil a future quest. I guess I was assuming that I would get a quest to do these things later in the game....

I even stumbled upon the Twisted Rune while exploring, and after getting slaughtered, thought "This will be fun to come back to when I get the quest..." But the quest never came. Same with most of the liches - the quest never came.

I wish there was some way to know if it is OK to clear an area without it ruining a quest.

Some of the hardest battles I have been in, was to get the demon heart, and fighting Samia´s group in King Stroms III dungeon.

I too found the Shadow Dragon quite formidable, facing him when my party was 9th level. Having replayed that battle many, many, times, I have it in my head that you need to cast spell thrust before he takes any melee damage. I know, I know, what good could a Spell Thrust possibly do? Well, I always cast breach right away, to eliminate the Stoneskin and Prot. from Magical Weapons. At this point my fighters are still hacking away with no effect (and no messages). The game acts as if the Stoneskin were still up. It may be that I finally hack through all the stoneskin layers just as the Spell Thrust goes off, but it's happened several times and it never fails:

Cast breach.
cast spell thrust.
THEN the fighters finally start doing damage.

In the meantime, very easy to lose an NPC or two.

For later in the game, Kangaxx and the Twisted Rune are almost equally difficult for my party.

But I'm sure there's lots of tough fights out there...anyone take on the Silver Dragon?
