IG: Your background has been mostly in the RPG genre. Should we expect Gravity Bear's games to have an RPG flavor, or are you exploring new territory with your projects?
Phil Shenk: Well, I really feel strongly about character, and discovery of one kind or another. I vastly prefer games that are more... "gamey" in the sense that there is a system in place, rules and mechanics, and the player interacts with them to grow and advance and explore. I'm not a fan of games that you figure out once and then you're done, that's not what I'm into. RPGs are traditionally some of the best examples of that style of game.
But RPG can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. I think of Animal Crossing as basically an RPG. Not so much in the state department, but it's got the world, the discovery and exploration, the character and personal expression. Expect to find all of those elements in our games in one form or another. But moving beyond labels, we're really excited about evolving and morphing how traditional game mechanics are presented. I think it's going to be a fun time to be making games.
