We have rounded up some more reviews for Triumph Studios' Age of Wonders threequel, and they all seem to suggest that the title is a worthy addition to the fantasy strategy/RPG series.
Polygon, 8/10.
After many hours of struggling to be a stronger player, my number of total game-saves lessened, even as the game's complexity continued to grow. Victories in real life may be opaque and rare, but I forgot all about that while conquering this colorful world of tough choices and zero-sum options. It's tough to wield so much power, but control is hard-earned. As it should be.
PCGamesN, 8/10.
I'm not sure if anything is worth waiting 11 years for, but if it was, it would be Age of Wonders III. This isn't Duke Nukem Forever, shoved out the door to exploit ravenous fans. Nostalgia has a lot of weight, and this definitely feels like something that could have existed over a decade ago when we were swimming in turn-based strategy, but that's not why it's great. It builds on its past rather than just using it as currency. The familiar sits beside the modern, the fleshed out classes, the deeper tactical combat. It's the best that Age of Wonders has ever been.
GameSpot, 7/10.
Online foibles aside, with its tactically rewarding battles and streamlined empire management, Age of Wonders III is a well-crafted strategy game that doesn't let itself get bogged down in needless busywork. It pushes your focus onto its strongest suit, the battlefield, while keeping everything else in the background. Some smart elements of randomness help keep you on your toes after multiple sessions, though you will find several go-to strategies still apply regardless of the sort of army you lead. Age of Wonders III is the welcome return of a long-absent strategy series and a tactically rewarding game.
IncGamers, 8/10.
Age of Wonders 3 has taken almost forty hours of my life away so far. Players new to the series will like the depth of both content and gameplay, and should also like the balanced gameplay mechanics. Veteran players will love discovering new class specific units, researching the wide variety of new spells and the expanded story, but I do fear that some veteran players might take a while to get used to the Age of Wonders 3 changes.
Overall though, players of any experience level will find enjoyable, rich strategy gameplay from Age of Wonders 3. Plus, if you're anything like me, it'll provide long-lasting memories of crushing your friends in battle.
