D&D Online's approach to online community building also reflects upon this. Most online RPGs right now have servers with thousands of players and enormous amounts of landscape to explore, making the starting player feel like he's just another number. Not so here. Each server "city" in D&D Online will only hold a few hundred people, and there's no shared gameplay space -- you field party members in the city, and then you visit one of the server's dungeon areas to kick monster ass. The idea is to make each individual server a little more tightly wound, similar to the great text-based MUDs of the past -- a place where everybody knows your name, in other words.
