After letting Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 4: Vault-Tec Workshop DLC sink in for a few days, it's time to scavenge the online coverage and pick out those articles that have been categorized as a critique.
IGN gives it an 8.2/10:
Vault-Tec Workshop’s wealth of new structures and tools make it essential for hardcore crafters and Overseer wannabes alike. Its handful of hilarious characters and quests don’t stand up on their own, but they’re not the reason you’d attend the show in the first place. This is settlement builder’s dream, through and through.
GameRevolution gives it a 4.5/5:
Fallout 4's Vault-Tec Workshop DLC would be more than worth it for most players if all it did was make the cavern space available to build their own vault. That it adds a 4-5 hour quest on top of making these assets available, for the same $5 price as the other workshop DLCs, makes it a really fantastic value, and one that will give a far greater return to anyone who's wanted to take their experience from Fallout Shelter to the main game. But if you're the type of player who expects a fuller story-based DLC from the Fallout series, this may not be for you.
PushSquare gives it a 6/10:
Vault-Tec Workshop is Fallout 4's best settlement DLC, but that won't mean much to those who don't enjoy building settlements to begin with. The often comical experiments that you can subject your dwellers to offer a few hours of fun, and the add-on provides loads of new items and structures to work with, but at the end of the day, we're glad that this marks the end of the game's Workshop offerings - we're just not convinced that Fallout 4 needed so much premium crafting clutter.
FextraLife gives it a 7.5/10:
Vault-Tec Workshop gives builders new toys to play with and a cavernous subterranean space to build it all in. It’s not the biggest DLC out there in terms of story content, although it is the only of the workshops DLCs to provide any kind of story at all. This makes the workshop a decent value for the 4.99 USD price as long as players are aware of what they are getting into. Players looking for deep story driven content over settlements, would be better suited with Far Harbor or the upcoming Nuka-World which are classic expansions that feature in depth stories and new gear. If you’re a player heavily invested in coming up with new and creative ways to build your settlement network then this DLC is worth a look.
Stevivor gives it a 5/10:
Fallout 4 was an epic game, very much deserving of the 10/10 rating we bequeathed upon it, but its DLC offerings are another story altogether. If you have the game’s “Season Pass”, you might as well grab a couple extra new Achievements or Trophies. If you’ve been buying DLC piecemeal, leave it alone – unless, of course, you’re very much into crafting.
Gamerheadquarters gives it an 8.4/10:
The Vault Tec DLC wasn't by any means amazing, but it does grant players access to the tools and the space to build their own vault. While it's not on the level of Fallout Shelter or as detailed in smaller items as I'd like it still does capture that magic of controlling a vault. You get to not only build a vault, but also run it with settlers and even work out experiments if you're creative enough as well. It also provides some small extra story elements to make the vault fit into the story and I did appreciate that. As with all other Workshop reviews I'll mention that while PC players don't get a huge benefit from the items there are some snazzy new items, quest lines and a fairly large space to build within. As someone that likes settlements and loves vaults this package is great, it provides a nice expansion to the experience.
And iDigitalTimes gives it a 4/5:
As the penultimate Fallout 4 DLC, it’s nice seeing Bethesda treat Vault-Tec Workshop more like the Automatron DLC than a Workshop one. The added storyline was a welcome addition to what would otherwise be another collection of new craftable objects to play around with. Oh yeah, and Clem is just wonderful.
