While we haven't been covering Armored Warfare due to the fact that it strays too far from our scope, Obsidian Entertainment has historically been a studio we've paid close attention to, due to their history and pedigree in RPGs. And while later it looked like things were looking bright for the company, thanks to the success of Pillars of Eternity and the release of another game based on the same technology, Tyranny, it now looks like the end of the year will be bitter for an undisclosed number of employees.
According to a report from VentureBeat, that cites official sources and includes a statement from CEO Feargus Urquhart, an unspecified number of employees from the Armored Warfare team will be affected by layoffs. The only meagerly positive aspect of this is that the layoffs won't happen until early next year, and Obsidian is trying to help the developers find new jobs:
“This week we let some of our developers on Armored Warfare know that they are being laid off early next year. The publisher of Armored Warfare decided to move a portion of the development of the product to their headquarters in Moscow,” Urquhart said in an emailed statement. “We remain extremely proud of Armored Warfare and all the work we have and will continue to put into it. None of the other products at Obsidian were affected by this. We wish our people the best, and are working with them to find homes with other developers.”
We hope everyone affected manages to land on their feet. This would already be bad news normally, but it must be extremely disheartening to be notified of such a decision around the holiday season.
