Here's a batch of reviews for Games Farm's Norse-inspired action-RPG, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard. From the looks of it, the general impressions haven't changed much since the early reviews – the game is mostly good but with its fair share of issues. Take a look:
GameSpew 5/10:
All in all, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard isn’t terrible, it’s just not particularly good, either. It looks nice, but its gameplay facets are lacking a lot of polish, and what should be a cathartic and enjoyable timesink ends up being monotonous and annoying. If you’ve worn out your Diablo disc, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard may fill a tiny bit of the void but mostly, its painful similarities yet numerous missteps will likely just frustrate you.
Worthplaying 7.5/10:
In the end, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is good. It retains most of what makes the genre so appealing, and the other changes, like environmental dangers, amplify the formula instead of watering it down. It doesn't move the genre forward, though, and the lack of a custom preset combined with spotty performance on middle-of-the-road hardware will make some people see this as rather unpolished. For those who want something new in the genre, Vikings is worth a shot.
Hooked Gamers 7.2/10:
I don’t think anyone will consider Viking: Wolves of Midgard’s hack & slash play as anything novel but some of its other innovations are very welcome. The environment forcing you to take some time to recover is a nice little feature but the town building aspect is what I enjoyed the most. It sounds like a simple enough addition but the impact on character progression and the relevance of loot and materials should not be overlooked. What you do during a mission, or rather bring from one, actually matters beyond a few gold coins in your inventory. Fun? Fun.
Hardcore Gamer 4/5:
Vikings – Wolves of Midgard takes the formula made popular by the game named after the Spanish word for devil and makes it its own. I wouldn’t go as a far to say this is a Diablo killer, but this is one of the more impressive titles that follows that game’s template. The looting, crafting and killing formula is one that has been done many times over and it is no less addictive in this title. This interpretation of Ragnarok and Norse mythology creates an interesting campaign setting that’s not often used in games, and the visual and sound design make this an engrossing title once the player gets past the tutorials. For fans of action RPGs, Vikings – Wolves of Midgard is a must play.
PlayStation Universe 7.5/10:
By delving so deeply into the established dungeon crawler playbook then, Wolves of Midgard offers up little in the way of surprise, but the game isn't entirely bereft of innovation as its exposure and hub building system both add worthwhile wrinkles to a genre where refinement typically comes in measured steps, rather than leaps and bounds.
Elsewhere, while the recycling of maps, poor side quests and lack of split screen multiplayer are invariably problematic, Wolves of Midgard nonetheless acquits itself ably with a good grasp of hack and slash fundamentals and a welcome injection of humour that frequently borders on the acerbic and sly.
